Miami Dolphins: 4 Legitimate Picks in the 2011 NFL Supplemental Draft
Am I out of my mind? Maybe. However, have you looked at the players who are legitimately considering entering the supplemental draft? Have you seen the what collegiate drama is dropping good football players at the feet of potential NFL organizations a year early? Such drama is making the supplemental draft worth paying attention to.Ā
Yahoo Sports has some decent information on these guys. However, most coverage, including my own, is focusing on Terrelle Pryor. We're missing the story on the fall out from a handful of other Ohio St athletes and one very legit wide receiver from Notre Dame.Ā
The guys who may be available would be considered first day talent in the NFL draft.Ā
Let me know, would you pull the trigger on any of these guys? Should the Miami Dolphins, or YOUR team take the risk on guys who were kicked out of school?Ā
I'm very curious to know.Ā
Nevertheless, here's the breakdown of the most notable names which may be available.Ā
Dan Herron, RB, Ohio St.
1 of 45'10" 205 pounds: 1155 yards, 16 touchdowns, 5.3 YPC
Great stats against great collegiate competition. He was one of the five kicked out of Ohio St., he was predicted to be a first or second-round pick in the 2012 NFL draft. Tempting isn't it?? Those are impressive numbers for a junior; impressive enough to have made a run at the 2011 NFL draft.Ā
His nickname is "Boom" because he can run up the middle, he's a strong running back. However, his overall tendency is to bounce it outside. Honestly, he looks like a back who would suit up for the Indianapolis Colts.Ā
He has run the inside game, outside, and the Wildcat. He seems to fit the bill for what the Miami Dolphins like to do. He reminds me of a faster, more athletic Patrick Cobbs, but that's just the eye exam and I may need glasses.Ā
He would be an interesting partner for Daniel Thomas in the Dolphins backfield.Ā
DeVier Posey, WR, Ohio State
2 of 46'2", 210 pounds: 53 catches 848 yards, 12 TDs
Those numbers scream two words: possession receiverāand many teams need scoring. I don't think the Dolphins would go with a pick like this. It seems to me that the Fins are still refining the talent they have and adding a rookie would mire the waters even more.
While I like Brian Hartline, sometimes it's hard to see how he fits. You would have to love your two starting receivers if they were Brandon Marshall and Davone Bess, throw "Clyde" Gates in the mix and there is a clear vision for the perimeter game.Ā
However, Posey would fit so well with a team like St. Louis or even Pittsburgh. He's a steal in the sixth or seventh round in a supplemental draft, especially when he's projected starting in the third based on team need.Ā
Once again, he was one of the starters kicked out of Ohio State because he broke NCAA rules. Now, I wonder if he'll take that humble pie and turn it into an NFL career. There's definitely a place for him there.Ā
Mike Adams, RT, Ohio State
3 of 46'8", 305 pounds: right or left tackle
Here is another athlete projected to go as high as the second round in the 2012 NFL draft. He'll possibly be available in the supplemental draft. Are you tired of Ohio State yet? Can you see what a hit this collegiate program will take in the next two or three seasons? What a shame.
The early thought on him, when I watch his video, is that he's more of a right tackle. Great on his feet, athletic, well built. Reminds me a little bit of Nate Solder...who I'm still extremely disappointed that New England saw his value and the Dolphins could not.Ā
Here's a great tackle to back up or push to start at the right tackle position. He's 6'8", what's not to love about that? The greatest attribute about Adams is that he's played in an offense which requires athletes: pulling, releasing, and a lot of shuffling because of Pryor's ability.Ā
Of all the picks, I would pull the trigger on this one if I were Jeff Ireland. He'll learn as a backup, he'll be a great starter soon.Ā
Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame
4 of 46'3", 228 pounds:Ā 79 receptions, 1,025 yards, 12 touchdowns
He was projected to be the first wide receiver off the board in 2012 after a solid 2011 season. I like him a lot because he just catches the ball. He looks like he's got a future in the NFL with him.Ā
Then there are the two cases of alcohol related events in the past 14 months, or a year and two months. Does he have a chemical abuse issue? The NFL teams can figure that one out before the supplemental draft. However, Floyd seems to be doing his best to try and make his way back into the good graces of the Notre Dame coaching staff.Ā
There is a "to be continued" attached to the story of Michael Floyd. However, he could easily go in the second round of the supplemental draft. And, if I were the Dolphins, I would pull the trigger and keep Davone Bess in the slot.Ā
If there indeed is a chemical abuse issue involved, I would completely pass on him and wait and see. If he is going through personal treatment or not is an issue. I hope that any team would require him to seek counseling nevertheless because making him a pro, with a high money contract, is just waiting to decimate him personally and his career.Ā
