MLB Trade Rumors: Dream Scenarios for All 30 Teams at the Deadline

Robert KnapelJun 26, 2011

The MLB trade deadline is quickly approaching. Trade rumors have begin to fly around left and right. Many of these rumors do not come to fruition. However, there are some trade scenarios that some teams would love to see occur.

These trades would be the dream scenario for each team. For some teams, that means bringing in a player to help lead them to the playoffs, while for other teams it means getting a top prospect in return for a veteran player.

Every trade included on this list is based off of MLB trade rumors that are already floating around about each team's needs or players they have specifically been linked to.

Arizona Diamonbacks: Bring in a Big Bat for First Base

1 of 30

The Arizona Diamonbacks have struggled to find consistent production from Juan Miranda and Xavier Nady at first base so far this season. It looks like it will be a tight race for the NL West crown this year, a big bat at first could push the D'Backs over the top.

If the Twins decide that they will become sellers this season, then the Diamonbacks could look to go after Jim Thome. Another possible trade option would be for the D'Backs to go after the Pirates Lyle Overbay.

Atlanta Braves: Pick Up a Speedster

2 of 30

The Atlanta Braves could certainly use another outfielder to help them down they stretch. They might find a match with the Houston Astros.

Recently, the Braves have been linked to Astros outfielder Michael Bourn. He would be a big improvement over current Braves center fielder Jordan Schafer. The speedster has led the National League in steals each of the past two years.

Baltimore Orioles: Get a Nice Return for J.J. Hardy

3 of 30

Once again at the trade deadline, the Baltimore Orioles will be sellers. With it appearing more and more likely that the New York Mets will hold on to Jose Reyes, J.J. Hardy could be the top shortstop available this year.

The Boston Red Sox could use an upgrade at short and Hardy may be the answer. The O's might be able to get a player such as Chris Balcom-Miller in return for Hardy.

Boston Red Sox: Acquire Jose Reyes

4 of 30

As was mentioned in the previous slide, the Red Sox will likely be looking for an upgrade at shortstop. Their dream choice would be Jose Reyes.

Reyes has been the best player in the National League this season and would be very expensive. The Red Sox would also likely want a window to sign Reyes to an extension.

At the moment, it looks like the Mets will not trade Reyes, but one long losing streak could change their mind.

Chicago Cubs: Finally Rid Themselves of Carlos Zambrano

5 of 30

It seems as if the Curse of the Billy Goat has struck the Cubs once again this year. They will not be making the playoffs unless they have a remarkable second half, so they should be sellers at the deadline.

The Cubs have had problems with Zambrano for over a year now and would love to get rid of him. The problem is his horrible contract. If they are able to some how move Zambrano without eating too much cash, it will certainly be a win for the Cubs.

Chicago White Sox: Add Pitching Help

6 of 30

At this point in the season, it is not certain if the White Sox will be buyers or sellers when the trade deadline arrives. In fact, they may even stay put and not make a move.

If the White Sox do make the decision to be buyers, they might look to add a pitcher to their starting rotation. The White Sox could try to make a move for Dodgers starter Hiroki Kuroda to help bolster their rotation.

Cincinnati Reds: Bring in Edwin Jackson

7 of 30

The Cincinnati Reds will likely be embattled in a dogfight for the NL Central crown. The Reds rank among the MLB's worst in ERA this season, and they could use another starting pitcher.

They could go after the White Sox's Edwin Jackson if the Sox decide to become sellers. Jackson is averaging just under six and one-third innings per start this year and is having a much better year than his ERA suggests.

Cleveland Indians: Improve at Third Base

8 of 30

The Indians have been one of the more pleasant surprises in the MLB this year. They are right in the middle of the battle for first place in the AL Central.

If the Indians want to win the AL Central they will likely need to find an upgrade at third base as it is clear that Jack Hannahan is not the answer. The Indians could try to go after Padres third baseman Chase Headley, although he will likely be expensive since he will not be a free agent until 2015.

Colorado Rockies: Upgrade at Second Base

9 of 30

Year in and year out, there is usually a tight race for the NL West title. This year, it looks like things will be the same.

The Rockies have recently brought up young players such as Charles Blackmon and Juan Nicasio, but the team could use some more veteran experience.

With Jonathan Hererra at second base, the Rockies could use some improvement there. Adam Kennedy looks like he would be a good fit for the Rockies.

Detroit Tigers: Find a Way to Acquire Jose Reyes

10 of 30

The Tigers have a good chance to win the AL Central this year. However, they could certainly use an upgrade at short.

Detroit has been one of the teams that has been linked to Mets shortstop Jose Reyes. Acquiring Reyes would be very difficult, but it would be a huge upgrade for the Tigers.

Florida Marlins: Bring Back a Huge Return for Hanley Ramirez

11 of 30

Sitting in last place in the NL East, it is already clear that the Marlins will be sellers at the trade deadline this year. There has been some talk that there is frustration about Hanley Ramirez building in Miami.

The Marlins could actually look to trade Ramirez, as they have done with other expensive but talented players in the past. The Los Angeles Angels are a possible destination and the Marlins return would be huge.

They would get Mike Trout, the game's No. 2 prospect, as well as another top prospect such as Jean Segura, Garrett Richards or Fabio Martinez Mesa.

Houston Astros: Build for the Future

12 of 30

The Houston Astros are owners of what is by far the worst record in the MLB. They will definitely be sellers when the trade deadline rolls around.

At this point, the Astros can only hope that they will be able to get good prospects in return for their players. Wandy Rodriguez and Michael Bourn are Astros who could bring back a solid return.

Kansas City Royals: Add to Their Already Stacked Farm System

13 of 30

After a surprising start, the Royals have already called up some of their top prospects such as Eric Hosmer, Danny Duffy and Mike Moustakas. While it is not the Royals time this year, it certainly will be in the near future.

The Royals have a few players that they could trade, with the most notable being Joakim Soria. He is having the worst season of his career, but he still has a lot of value. With Wil Myers now roaming the outfield, the Royals could look for a catching prospect.

The Yankees could be a fit for Soria. They have been linked to Francisco Rodriguez, and the Royals might be able to get Gary Sanchez for Soria.

Los Angeles Angels: Aquire an Impact Bat at Third Base

14 of 30

The Los Angeles Angeles have had a good first half of the season but will still have to pass the Texas Rangers to win the AL West.

One position that the Angels could look to improve is third base. Alberto Callaspo has been good at third base, but there is definitely room for an upgrade. Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez could be a big boost to the Angels lineup.

Los Angeles Dodgers: Shed Some Salary

15 of 30

The McCourt's ugly divorce and financial situation has already had a huge impact on the Dodgers. The biggest determinate of the deals the Dodgers make at the trade deadline this year will be how much salary they can shed.

Expensive players such as Rafael Furcal and Hiroki Kuroda could be moved to help resolve some of the team's payroll issues. The Dodgers can only hope to get decent prospects back in return.

Milwaukee Brewers: Bring in a Pitcher for the Run to the Playoffs

16 of 30

The Brewers' farm system is weak after the Zack Greinke trade this past offseason. They will have a hard time bringing in a top of the rotation pitcher.

Milwaukee can bring in a pitcher to help sure up the back half of their rotation. Pirates pitcher Paul Maholm would be a huge addition to the Brewers' rotation.

Minnesota Twins: Pick Up Some Prospects

17 of 30

It appears that for only the second time since the 2001 season that the Twins will finish the season with a record under .500. This puts the Twins in a position that they are not used to being in: as sellers.

Jason Kubel is going to be a free agent after this season and is about to come back from the disabled list. When he was healthy, Kubel was having a good year, and he should be able to bring the Twins back a decent prospect.

New York Mets: Hold on to Jose Reyes

18 of 30

Jose Reyes has been the best player in the National League this season. Reyes has been involved in a bunch of trade rumors, but the team should not look to deal him.

While Reyes has said that he does not want to negotiate in the season, it will be much easier for the Mets to keep him around after this season as long as they don't move him at the deadline.

The Mets could also compete for the wild card and need Reyes around if they have a chance to win it.

New York Yankees: Pull Off a Blockbuster Deal for Felix Hernandez

19 of 30

Yes, Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik has said that the team will not move King Felix. But this is certainly the Yankees dream scenario as they could use pitching help.

The New York Yankees have the players it would take to get Hernandez from the Mariners. Even though Hernandez is supposedly untouchable, every player has a price.

Oakland Athletics: Moving Josh Willingham

20 of 30

At this point in the season, it is becoming more and more obvious that the Athletics will be sellers at the trade deadline. The A's are currently in last place in the AL West.

One player that the A's could look to trade is Josh Willingham. The Atlanta Braves have already checked in on Willingham. Oakland may be able to get a player such as Todd Cunningham in return.

Philadelphia Phillies: Outfield Upgrade

21 of 30

Raul Ibanez has struggled for the Phillies this year, and Dominic Brown has not lived up to expectations this year. The Phillies may have to go after a pitcher as well based on Roy Oswalt's status.

Vladimir Guerrero has continued to prove that he can produce at a fairly high level. With the Orioles out of contention, they will likely look to move Guerrero who would be a perfect fit for the Phillies.

Pittsburgh Pirates: Bring in Some Prospects

22 of 30

The Pirates have been surprisingly competitive this season. However, the NL Central might be the most hotly contested division in baseball this season.

Pittsburgh does have some pieces that other teams will be interested. Joel Hanrahan is having an outstanding year and would be able to bring in a few good prospects for the Pirates.

Paul Maholm could also provide the Pirates with a nice return.

San Diego Padres: Put Themselves in a Position to Compete in 2012

23 of 30

After a surprising year last season, the Padres have struggled this year. They will be sellers at the deadline and have a few pieces that they can move.

Contenders will certainly be interested in players such as Ryan Ludwick and Orlando Hudson. The Padres could bring in some players that will help them prepare for a run at the playoffs in 2012.

San Francisco Giants: Replacing Buster Posey

24 of 30

Losing Buster Posey for the season has been a huge loss for the Giants. They have not been able to come close to replacing him.

There is talk that the Giants plan on moving Posey to first base when he returns. If they are serious about this, they should talk to the Yankees about acquiring Jesus Montero. They will likely have to move one of their top pitching prospects to get him.

Seattle Mariners: Gear Up for the Future

25 of 30

At this point, it is uncertain if the Mariners will be buyers or sellers at the trade deadline. The team should be very competitive in the near future, if not this year.

Brandon League currently leads the American League in saves and would be very valuable to multiple teams. The Mariners could get players in return that will help them compete next season.

St. Louis Cardinals: Find Someone to Help Fill in for Albert Pujols' Offense

26 of 30

The injury to Albert Pujols is obviously going to hurt the Cardinals. He was starting to heat up and even though he was having a bit of a down year, he was one of the best players in baseball.

St. Louis may begin to drop in the standings when Pujols is out. The Cardinals could use some offense at third base to bolster their lineup. Casey Blake could help the Cardinals moving forward.

Tampa Bay Rays: Pick Up a Shortstop to Help Them Win the AL East

27 of 30

The Tampa Bay Rays are in for a tough fight for the AL East crown. They have a solid rotation but they could use help for their lineup.

Tampa Bay could upgrade at shortstop. J.J. Hardy and Rafael Furcal are both options for the Rays.

Texas Rangers: Bring in Carlos Beltran

28 of 30

Last season, the Texas Rangers made baseball's best trade deadline deal when they brought in Cliff Lee. The move led to the Rangers reaching the World Series.

This year, the Rangers may need to make another big move. The Rangers could make another big move this year by acquiring Carlos Beltran. He would provide a great addition to the Texas Rangers lineup.

Toronto Blue Jays: Get Major League Ready Prospects

29 of 30

If the Blue Jays were in any other division than the AL East, they would be a very competitive team. Unfortunately, they have to compete against the likes of the Yankees, Red Sox and Rays.

The Blue Jays have some good, young talent and could be competitive in the near future. Toronto can try to bring in some major league ready prospects.

Washington Nationals: Get Help for When Strasburg and Harper Are Stars

30 of 30

The Washington Nationals have a lot to look forward to in the next few years when Stephen Strasburg returns and when Bryce Harper eventually reaches the majors. At the moment though, the Nationals should look to bring in pitching prospects.

The Nationals should look to move some of their relievers that could bring back players with middle of the rotation potential. Players such as Robbie Erlin and Felix Doubront could be on the Nationals radar.
