Kansas City Chiefs: Could Free Agency Turn out to Be a Chiefs Bonanza?
It starts with an agreement, which is looking more and more like a return to 2009 rules, which would include some kind of a cap, but more importantly, will allow players with only four years of experience to be unrestricted free agents. That is about 35 percent of all players, and that does not include undrafted college free agents.
Who is most likely to sign with the Chiefs? I'll stick out my neck here.
I had thought that their biggest need was at offensive right tackle, a reason I was angry they passed on Anthony Costonzo in the draft, but according to profootballfocus.com, Barry Richardson is hardly a weak link on this line. We all know he is a good drive blocker, but he rates ahead of almost every free agent offensive tackle as a pass blocker.

New Report on Colts-Richardson Situation

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
In all fairness, Cassel did have a lot of three step drops, and BR also had chip help, and Pope, to bail him out at times
Lets say Richardson is overated. Among OT, here's a group of names: Matt Light, Ryan Harris, Tyson Clabo and Willie Colon. All can be had. There for the taking, Scott; just open that wallet.
Matt Light makes sense, having already been drafted by Pioli, and I believe he is Pioli's top target. They'll try a two year deal, but that was New England's offer. He also won't come cheap. That's fine with me. The only question is whether Light will agree to play on the right side. He could for one year, then move to Left Tackle in year two, with Albert moving inside to his more natural guard position.
Ryan Harris missed last season in Denver and is on his way out since Denver has aborted their zone blocking scheme. That plays right into KC's hand. Tyson Clabo is OK as a pass blocker, but a passive when run blocker. Willie Colon graded out for three years in a row, as the Steelers' best OL and would be a huge upgrade if he's healthy. Reports here in Pittsburgh are that he is.
Then of course their is wide receiver. First of all, Dexter McCluster is now officially a Running Back. He won't even sit in on meetings with the receiver group. He'll be their 3rd down back and return man. They need a new slot WR. Some available are Steve Breaston, Brad Smith and Derek Mason. Any of them would be huge for the Chiefs.
I like Breaston. He had an unbelievable year last year in the slot, has close ties to Haley. and he can help keep the immature Baldwin stay out of Haley's doghouse if he should have problems with the playbook or show his increased propensity to not want to block. That won't cut it with Haley. Ask Dwayne Bowe. I'll be screaming if he doesn't block. He is 230 lbs.
Inside linebacker? Well, I like Jevon Belcher, but at 228, he really wears down in the second half against the run and has been a step slow in pass coverage.
Players who can help? How about Kevin Burnett, Brandon Siler, and Barrett Ruud. Burnett excels in pass coverage and is an outstanding blitzer. Siler can stuff the run. Ruud is the greatest athlete of the bunch.Stephen Tulloch would be the ultimate prize, however. He is Mr. Everything.
Nose tackle? Alan Branch played well in 2009, but was injured last year, making him a medical risk. Aubray Franklin is a possibility and don't forget Shaun Smith
Matt Leinart might make a good No. 2 Quarterback, with obvious ties to Haley. Brian Leonard or Leron McClain would give the Chiefs the best goal line runners in football, Evan Mathis or Trai Essex would be welcome for guard depth, as would Dawan Landry at safety
Then again maybe they only sign their own players. It will be very interesting.
