Terrelle Pryor: Why Philadelphia Eagles Are Pryor's Perfect Landing Spot

Donald WoodJun 13, 2011

When looking at the whole situation of former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Terrelle Pryor, most people can’t help but blame him for the mess that has gone down in Columbus.

After the resignation of Jim Tressel, it was inevitable that the focus and anger would divert to Pryor, and his early departure from the school was just as obvious.

It has become blatantly apparent that Pryor had issues off the field with arrogance and a feeling of entitlement, but this piece is about Pryor’s future.

Pryor will be entering the 2011 NFL Supplemental Draft when the lockout is lifted, but his NFL prospects at this time are very slim and uncertain to say the least.

Ohio State was happy to have him on their team because of the success he brought. In three seasons with the Buckeyes, Pryor scored 76 total touchdowns and threw for over 6,000 yards and rushed for over 2,000 yards.

Even with all of Pryor’s on the field success at Ohio State, there are still huge concerns over whether he can be a pocket quarterback at the NFL level.

With all considered, the best landing spot for Terrelle Pryor would be the Philadelphia Eagles.

The move would work on so many levels, not just for the Eagles but for Pryor as well. The biggest question coming into the league will be about his development as a quarterback and not his attitude, and there is no better team in the NFL working with mobile quarterbacks than Andy Reid and the Eagles.

If the Eagles bring Pryor in through the Supplemental Draft, let him know that he will not be a starter anytime soon, get him the proper mentoring like they did for Mike Vick and show him the ropes as time passes, Pryor could be the next great Vick-style quarterback.

Of course questions will be raised about his character flaws, but there is no better cure for cockiness than a reality check. When you have a guy like Mike Vick, who had the world in his hand and let it all slip away, teaching Pryor how not to act, that’s the kind of message that could stick with an impressionable youth.

Philadelphia has a history of working with troubled players, and they will not stifle Pryor’s enthusiasm. The team will show him how to turn the idea of entitlement into hard work and show him that he can be great if he dedicates himself to the craft.

Look at Eagles receiver DeSean Jackson. He is one of the cockiest players in the game, but the Philadelphia Eagles know how to handle that type of player. The organization depends on the veterans to show the younger players how to act and how to meet the expectations put on them by the team. Jackson now also shares agents with the young star, after Pryor hired the famous player manager Drew Rosenhaus.

One thing that everyone seems to be forgetting is that the Eagles will be looking for a quarterback because all signs point to Kevin Kolb being moved when the lockout is lifted. That would put Pryor in the perfect position to come in without any fuss and settle in for the long haul.

I think Pryor sitting on the bench in Philadelphia would soften his tough guy attitude and open him up for the learning that would be available to him. Whether or not his ego would let this all happen is a whole other topic.
