Arizona Diamondbacks Win 6 in a Row, Hello .500

Chris GreenMay 23, 2011

The Diamondbacks have now won six in a row and are back at .500.

Many had questioned after the first week of the season if they’d ever be back at .500 again—and here they are.

Next stop: World Series.

They have been nothing if not inconsistent and unpredictable through the first six weeks of the season. On a given night, you don’t know which side of the team will be responsible for winning, or losing, a particular game.

They are beating the better teams in the NL—the Reds, Rockies, Phillies and Braves—and falling short to some of the NL’s “other” teams, such as the Mets and Padres.

Unfortunately, this team has already shown what they are: win in bunches and lose in bunches.

Their pitching and offense is not consistent enough to do otherwise. While there is talent both at the mound and at the dish, it’s not the kind of talent that will allow the team to win.

Winning six games in a row is nice, but temper your expectations, because undoubtedly a four game slide is just around the corner…followed by a win streak…followed by a losing streak…followed by a win streak…and on and on.

Regardless of the score at the end of the game, perhaps the biggest improvement the team has made this season is that it actually appears as if they care about winning, about not being embarrassed on the field and one of the worst teams in baseball.

For the past few seasons, the team has all but given up whenever they were more than a few runs down. If a game was 4-0 in the third inning, you might as well pack up your peanuts and head for the exits.

Not the case anymore.

In addition to the accountability factor on the field, the front office has also held up their end of the bargain, saying “good day, sir” to a few underperforming veterans such as Armando Galarraga and Russell Branyan.

No more waiting for a player to realize their “potential.”

The team will be tested in the next two weeks, as they head to Colorado for a four game series and then host the Florida Marlins
