All About Baseball

Ryan HallamOct 16, 2008

Ever since about the end of August, we at Fighting Chance pretty much waived bye-bye to baseball to get focused on the upcoming football season. By that time, most people were either out of their playoffs, or it became very hard for me to think of what to write about that would still interest people.

However, we know that some of you just love baseball and are still looking for some articles about America’s Pastime. Well, for those of you who were with us during the Fantasy Baseball Scouting Report days, I would like to welcome back to the show, Eric Stashin from Rotoprofessor.com.

Eric was my co-host for that show, and we had some great debates over the airwaves, and we all became aware that this guy knew what he is talking about. I still remain in contact with Eric, and we decided that we  should exchange some content, his baseball here on Fighting Chance for my football on Roto Professor. So, below you will find his article on Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds, who turned into one of my favorite fantasy youngsters.

Enjoy the article.

I’ll admit, prior to the season, I didn’t give enough credit to the Reds Joey Votto, who did emerge this season as a potentially usable option in all formats, certainly as a corner infielder at the very least. He was ranked in our postseason 1B rankings at No. 18 (click here for the full rankings), but that really doesn’t tell the full story.

Let’s take a look at the numbers that he did put up this season:

.297 (156-526)
.330 BABIP
.368 OBP
.506 SLG
24 HR
84 RBI
69 R
7 SB
19.4% K%
10.1% BB%

The K% is a number that you don’t really like and could help to explain why his RBI total was only in the mid-80s. With runners in scoring position, it is actually a little bit higher, at an even 20 percent (23 K’s in 115 AB). If he could simply put the ball in play in those situations, he’d have the potential to reach the 100-RBI plateau.
