2011 NFL Draft: Butch Davis Reviews Buffalo Bills Picks Searcy and White

Dan Van WieApr 30, 2011

Unless you happened to be tuned in to the Day 3 telecast of the 2011 NFL Draft on the NFL Network, you would have missed the guest analyst coverage they provided throughout the final four rounds.

The guest analysts were the head coaches from North Carolina (Butch Davis), Notre Dame (Brian Kelly) and Wisconsin (Bret Bielema). While Davis remained on the set, the Bills drafted two of his Tar Heel players, so naturally Davis was asked to break down or assess each player. Here are his quotes on both:

North Carolina safety Da'Norris Searcy

"He is a senior. He came in to our team as a running back and we converted him to safety, where he started for us the last two years. He also was a punt returner and a kick returner. He is a tough and physical kid. Is an outstanding special teams member.

As a safety, he will drop down in the box. He can cover backs out of the backfield and tight ends. He will be a great addition for the Buffalo Bills."ย

Fellow analyst Mike Mayock then asked Davis which safety position he thought he was better at and Davis said Strong Safety. Charles Davis then jumped in and said that he could be paired with Jairus Byrd to give the Bills a solid safety duo.

The analysts reminded us that he is a big kid (is 5'10 5/8" and weighs 223 pounds) but still ran very well at the Combines. He did 27 reps at the bench press.

Davis then added that "Searcy loves to train and workout in the weight room. He will do anything to help his team win."

Searcy made 106 tackles, and had 5 interceptions in his career. He returned 35 punts for an average of 12.2 yards per return, and scored one touchdown.

In the fifth round, the Bills then drafted another Tar Heel...

North Carolina running back Johnny White

White is a 5'10" tall and weighs 208 pounds. He is 23 years old. He had 130 rushes in 2010 for 720 yards and scored 7 touchdowns. In his career, White rushed 246 times for 1,262 yards and 8 touchdowns.

Here was Butch Davis, sharing his thoughts on Johnny White. "You have to fall in love with Johnny White. At Carolina, he played strong safety, wide receiver, and running back. He did absolutely everything.

"He catches the ball well out of the backfield. He is as tough as he can be. He is excellent in special teams, is a great gunner and kick returner.

"He was one of the fastest kids in our program. He ran the 40 in the high 4.4's to 4.5. Has lots of versatility. Buffalo Bills will be glad that they have him on their team".

Mike Mayock then said: From a special teams perspective there was a buzz at your College Pro Day, when he was running the 40.

Davis then replied: He went through a lot of adversity, trying to find a place to play. He finally became our premier running back and he did an excellent job for us.

There you go, Bills fans. Straight from their college head coach. Sounds like we got some talent with both picks.
