Chicago White Sox Beginning to Dig a Hole in April

Jon FromiApr 20, 2011

The Chicago White Sox are beginning to venture into dangerous but familiar territory.

With most of an 11-game road trip staring Ozzie Guillen's crew in the face, the White Sox are turning what was a promising start to the season into another hole from which to climb out.

With Tuesday's 2-1 loss to Tampa Bay, Chicago now sits at 7-10 on the season. The White Sox have lost six in a row, dating back to last Wednesday when they let a three-run lead slip away in the ninth.

Since that loss, the White Sox have led in just one game for a half-inning.

The road isn't the easiest place to snap back to form, but Chicago had better figure things out soon. They already trail the surprising Indians by five games and are one loss away from sharing the basement in the Central Division with the Twins.

Coming on the heels of Chicago's 5-0 loss to Tampa Bay in the first game of the road trip was news that Jake Peavy left his rehab start in Double-A Birmingham after 15 pitches with was was called "discomfort."

Peavy was scheduled to throw in Triple-A Charlotte this weekend and join the team if all went well. It looks like Peavy's return may be pushed back a few weeks unless the club is satisfied that all is sound in his surgically-repaired right shoulder.

Peavy's fortunes mirror those of the White Sox at the moment. A week ago, he was sailing through rehab work and targeting a late April return to the Chicago rotation. The White Sox were a game out of first and three outs away from an 8-4 start.

Seven days later, though, things have changed—that's baseball for you.

It's not time to blow up the "All In" campaign by any means. But we all remember the 6-11 start through the season's first 16 games on the way to a 9-14 April.

Snapping the losing streak and collecting some wins on the road would help right the ship.
