Philadelphia Eagles: Grading the 2006 NFL Draft for the Team

Bryn SwartzApr 14, 2011

The following nine slides will offer an analysis of the 2006 draft for the Philadelphia Eagles, as well as an overall draft grade on the final slide.

For players who have spent time with the Eagles and another NFL team, I've included two grades—one grading them on their performance with the Eagles, and the second grading their overall NFL performance.

To view the evaluations of the 2010 and 2009 and 2008 and 2007 drafts, click here and here and here and here.

Brodrick Bunkley, Defensive Tackle, 1 (14)

Bunkley has been an average starting defensive tackle during his five seasons in the NFL. He has 111 tackles and six sacks throughout his career.

But he’s never developed into the star the Eagles hoped he would be when they traded up in the first round to draft him.

Grade: C+

Winston Justice, Tackle, 2 (39)

Forget about the four-sack game he allowed against Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora in the 2007 season (and Osi actually finished the game with six sacks).

He’s been a good football player since he replaced Shawn Andrews as starter at the beginning of the 2009 season. He was benched in the wild-card loss to the Packers this past season but he should benefit from new offensive line coach Howard Mudd.

The Eagles believe Justice can develop into a Pro Bowler.

Grade: B

Chris Gocong, Linebacker, 3 (71)

Gocong played 47 games in his first three seasons, starting in 35 of them. He totaled 114 tackles and four sacks with the Eagles. He lost his starting job to rookie Moise Fokou late in 2009 and was traded to the Browns after the season.

He started all 16 games for the Browns, collecting 49 tackles and two sacks.

Jean-Gilles has played in 42 games, starting 26 of them, since he was drafted in 2007. He is probably better suited as a backup and struggled at right guard in 2010.

He needs to control his weight also. He reportedly weighed 400 pounds a few years ago and became the first active NFL player to undergo lap band surgery.

Grade: B

Jason Avant, Wide Receiver, 4 (109)

Avant has established himself as one of the better possession receivers in the NFL. He has the best hands on the Eagles. And he is one of the better third-down targets in the league.

His receptions have increased consistently each season, from 9 to 23 to 32 to 41 to 51.

Grade: A-

Jeremy Bloom, Wide Receiver, 5 (147)

The Eagles took a chance on the 24-year-old\, three-time world champion Olympian. But Bloom spent the 2006 season on IR and was later released by the Eagles.

He had a couple of stints with the Pittsburgh Steelers but never played in the NFL.

Eagles/NFL Grade: D

Omar Gaither, Linebacker, 5 (168)

7 of 9

Gaither started for 2007 and 2008 but lost his starting job to Jeremiah Trotter midway through the 2009 season.

In five seasons, he has played 67 games and started 36. He’s collected 214 tackles and is a great backup linebacker or a decent starter.

Grade: B+

LaJuan Ramsey, Defensive Tackle, 6 (204)

8 of 9

Ramsey played in 15 games over two seasons with the Eagles, intercepting one pass (against Brett Favre) and collecting nine tackles.

He had stints with the San Francisco 49ers, Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans, and St. Louis Rams, and now plays for the Hartford Colonels of the United Football League.

Although no one became a superstar, all of the players drafted in 2006 became solid players with the Eagles.

Bunkley and Justice are solid starters still. Gaither and Jean-Gilles are primarily suited as backups but can start also.

Avant is the third receiver and could be a No.2 receiver on some teams.

Gocong was a quality player and is a starter for the Browns.

Ramsey had a decent career for a sixth-round pick.

And Bloom never reached the NFL.
