2011 Dallas Cowboys: Decaying of the Infrastructure?

Michael Heck Apr 11, 2011

My father and I have had multiple conversation about his beloved Dallas Cowboys. He moaned the draft day fiasco in 2004 when the Cowboys traded their first round pick to the Buffalo Bills, losing their opportunity to take a certain running back from Oregon State, Steven Jackson. Jerry Jones then tried to (literally) purchase a draft pick from, then commissioner, Roger Tagliabue (Jones was shot down).

The Cowboys opted to take Julius Jones from Notre Dame. We all know how that worked out. What could've and should've been!

Even though Jerry Jones has erected a monster building, his team has high expectations, high salaries, but low performances.

You know this team is capable of more.

He's is constantly tempted by talent, not necessarily the right talent for the team, or at the right price (Roy Williams).

First, let me say that the NFL is a better place when the Cowboys are competitive. It's true. Everybody makes more money in the NFL when the Cowboys are relevant; Jerry Jones has accomplished that.

If the Cowboys want to be the face of the NFL, which is often the desire of Jones, then he must be more of a general manager in its purity rather than a fan or homer, if you will.

That means stabilizing his offensive line. This is the portion of a team, on any level, is where a GM and coach must give a great deal of consideration. Simply put, whether it is Kitna or Romo, if he has the time to throw, or if the running back can see daylight, this team wins.

The rumor is that the Cowboys should draft Tyron Smith from USC. That would be a step in the right direction (I am from Los Angeles, I've had the privilege of watching him). That is building the infrastructure. The Cowboys don't need more running backs, wide receivers, or even quarterbacks. They need competition at the offensive line.

Romo has had the talent; he's gotten hurt. Kitna, while shaky at first, took advantage of the talent. However, the offensive line was the weak link in the end. Andre Gurode is the talent. It is understandable if the Cowboys think offensive line first, third, and fifth round. They need depth and stability.

If the Cowboys like Smith, good stuff. However, it would make a lot of sense to draft Stefen Wisniewski in the second. He plays both center and guard. His consistent play at Penn State is undeniable. It makes sense.

While the Cowboys have the offensive skill set to hang with anybody, the front office must focus on rebuilding the offensive line.

Build the infrastructure. If you want 100,000+ people to cheer you on, you must build.
