NFL Draft 2011: The Miami Dolphins Should Have Been at Greg McElroy's Pro Day

Andrew RobesonApr 8, 2011

Riddle me this: The Miami Dolphins haven't been able to find a quarterback who wins since Dan Marino retired. Well, there was that Chad Pennington guy, but he turned out to be the world's most fragile man.

So when Greg McElroy, Alabama's starting quarterback for the last two seasons, had his pro day, why was no one from the Dolphins organization there?

They should have been there because McElroy knows how to win, and that is something that cannot be taught.

In McElroy's first year as a starter, he led Alabama to a 14-0 record and a national championship. In fact, McElroy had a winning streak that lasted from middle school until the Crimson Tide fell to South Carolina in their sixth game of the 2010 season.

The Dolphins could use a winner, so why didn't they show up for McElroy's pro day?

Yeah, there is the big looming question of whether his arm is strong enough for the NFL. But shouldn't the Dolphins at least found out in person?

Dolphins management needs to change their mindset if they plan on winning anytime soon. Instead of seeing McElroy as a college star who couldn't translate his game to the NFL, they should have seen a winner (am I sounding like Charlie Sheen yet?).

My point is, the Dolphins should be doing their due diligence. They obviously need a quarterback—one who knows how to win.

Why is that no one in the Dolphins organization could take the time to go see McElroy in person?

It is worth noting that this was McElroy's first real pre-draft workout, making it the first time NFL teams would have an opportunity to evaluate him up close. McElroy is coming back from an injury to his throwing hand suffered in the Senior Bowl. That injury kept McElroy out of the combine and Alabama's first pro day.

It's unlikely McElroy is the answer to the Dolphins quarterback problems. This is obvious. However, as a late-round pick, McElroy would be the kind of highly intelligent player you'd want on your sideline. The kind of backup who gets in a game and steals a starter's secure job from him (like any Dolphins quarterback has had a secure job since Marino).

Maybe I'm way off base, but what I know is that it is hard to find guys who are born winners. The Dolphins have shown they no longer know how to win (consistently), so why are they too good to give McElroy the time of day?
