2011 NFL Draft: Odds Von Miller Will Wind Up with Each of the Top 10 Teams
When you see a player like Von Miller at the combine, he puts up solid numbers. However, it doesn’t do his style of play justice.
Miller could be one of the best outside linebackers to come out in the draft in a long time, and he can fit in any style of defense.
Miller’s run-blocking skills are only matched by his pass-rushing abilities, but his ability to drop into coverage could be his ultimate X-factor.
Wherever Miller lands come draft day, the team that picks him will get a longtime solution to its linebacker issues.
10. Washington Redskins
1 of 10
Odds of Drafting Von Miller: 10 percent
If Miller falls to 10th in the draft, the Washington Redskins will take him.
Odds are he won’t make it to 10th and the Redskins won’t have to make that decision.
Besides the fact that he’ll be long gone, the Redskins are pretty well set at linebacker.
With players like Brian Orakpo, London Fletcher and Rocky McIntosh manning the linebacking corps, their pick in the first round should be used on one of the many other areas that need addressing.
Maybe quarterback? I’m looking at you, Cam Newton.
9. Dallas Cowboys
2 of 10
Odds of Drafting Von Miller: 20 percent
While the linebacking group in Dallas isn’t getting any younger, there are bigger fish to fry this upcoming draft.
With their struggles at offensive line and in the secondary, going after Miller—if he is available—would result in trading a player like Anthony Spencer for help in the secondary.
While Spencer has been solid, the real star of the linebacking corps is Pro Bowler DeMarcus Ware.
DeMarcus Ware will be 30 soon, so if Miller is there at the ninth pick, he will definitely be considered.
8. Tennessee Titans
3 of 10
Odds of Drafting Von Miller: 40 percent
The Tennessee Titans are in a transitional period in their organization, and a player like Miller would be a great addition to a blue-collar team.
The Titans’ outside linebackers, Will Witherspoon and Gerald McRath, played solid last season, but Miller would walk in and be a starter.
Miller’s ability to stop the rush and rush the passer would help out the defensive line and the secondary.
While I think he won’t be there to take, if Miller is available, the Titans will take him and address their other issues, especially quarterback, later in the draft.
7. San Francisco 49ers
4 of 10
Odds of Drafting Von Miller: 50 percent
With the teams selecting ahead of the San Francisco 49ers trying to address offensive problems, there is a slight chance that Miller slips to them at seventh overall.
While the 49ers' inside linebackers—Takeo Spikes and Patrick Willis—are two of the best middle men in the league, the outside backs leave a little to be desired.
Ahmad Brooks and Manny Lawson are solid, but Miller is a game-changer.
Even with the struggles at quarterback, the 49ers would take Von Miller if he falls to them at seven.
6. Cleveland Browns
5 of 10
Odds of Drafting Von Miller: 60 percent
The Cleveland Browns need help at linebacker, but they need help in a lot of other places as well.
If Miller falls to them at sixth overall, he will be a top consideration. However, GM Mike Holmgren has a lot of holes to fill—from the offensive line to the defensive line.
Miller is a game-changer on any team; if he is available, he would be twice as good as current outside linebackers David Bowens and Matt Roth combined.
Miller’s pass rush would also allow standout rookie cornerback Joe Haden to wreak more havoc.
5. Arizona Cardinals
6 of 10
Odds of Drafting Von Miller: 80 percent
I believe that Ken Whisenhunt's Arizona Cardinals will be the team that pulls the trigger on Miller at the upcoming entry draft.
With the departure of veteran Joey Porter, it would be the perfect time to get a new face in the lineup that has leadership qualities.
Although the Cardinals need a quarterback, I think they will find a replacement for Derek Anderson in the free-agency market.
While not going after a quarterback might seem counterproductive for the future, Miller can keep the Cardinals in games that last year they weren’t.
4. Cincinnati Bengals
7 of 10
Odds of Drafting Von Miller: 20 percent
I don’t believe the Cincinnati Bengals have any real interest in Miller.
With the turmoil around veteran quarterback Carson Palmer, the Bengals will be concentrating on the offensive side of the ball.
Whether or not Palmer stays will dictate whether they take a quarterback to replace him or a new wide receiver to appease him.
With young outside linebackers like Keith Rivers and Rey Maualuga, the future looks bright in the middle for the Bengals.
3. Buffalo Bills
8 of 10
Odds of Drafting Von Miller: 40 percent
The Buffalo Bills have a lot of problems they need to fix, and outside linebacker is definitely one of those holes.
While Miller will be a great player for a long time, players like quarterbacks Blaine Gabbert and Cam Newton and defensive tackle Nick Fairley would fill bigger holes for the team.
While popular opinion may disagree, I think Newton should be the No. 3 pick for the Bills.
Very rarely does a team that has very little free-agency pull get a chance to bring in a big-time personality. Newton may not be the best quarterback, but he has the attitude to be the face of a franchise.
2. Denver Broncos
9 of 10
Odds of Drafting Von Miller: 60 percent
With new head coach John Fox, it’s hard to tell what direction the Denver Broncos will go in with their first pick.
While Scouts, Inc. has Miller ranked second overall among prospects eligible for the draft, Fox and new consultant John Elway may have something else up their sleeves.
Elvis Dumervil showed that he is one of the better linebackers in the league before getting hurt last season, and the tandem of Dumervil and Miller could be dangerous.
The Broncos have questions on both sides of the ball, but if they select Miller with the second overall pick, their defense will be tough.
1. Carolina Panthers
10 of 10
Odds of Drafting Von Miller: 20 percent
The Carolina Panthers have questions at quarterback, offensive line, defensive line and the secondary—just to name a few.
New head coach Ron Rivera is a defensive mastermind. When he sees the likes of Von Miller and cornerback Patrick Peterson, it will be hard for him to turn them down.
Now that he is the head coach, though, he will have to consider a new quarterback. While Jimmy Clausen wasn’t his pick, it will be interesting to see if they will even consider taking another quarterback first overall.
I feel like Carolina would be smart to trade back, get value for the pick and aim for another defensive player later in the first round.
