Carlton Mitchell: The Star Player the Cleveland Browns Are Looking for?

Jarrod ArgobrightMar 11, 2011

During the last two years, the Cleveland Browns have drafted numerous players. Some—like last year's selections Joe Haden and T.J. Ward—have brought back immediate results.

Others—such as Kaluka Maiava and Shawn Lauvao—are still looking to make their mark.

Yet, there are still others who are patiently waiting for their chance. One such player looking for a chance to shine could be Carlton Mitchell.

The second-year receiver out of the University of South Florida was selected in the sixth round by the Browns in last year's draft. At 6'3" and 220 pounds, Mitchell ran a 4.40 40-yard dash and was originally projected as a third to fourth-rounder until he got hurt in his final season with the Bulls.

When the Browns selected him with the 177th pick overall, many believed they had a diamond in the rough. Mitchell, however, would never really get to see the field in 2010. He only touched the ball once, on a reverse that actually ended up gaining nine yards.

Interestingly enough, the big question was who Cleveland would go to with its starters in jeopardy of missing significant playing time.

As the 2011 offseason is in full swing, the question once again becomes how the Cleveland Browns will address one of their biggest needs: the wide receiver position.

Many have speculated that drafting A.J. Green should be their top priority, as he is a talent who is too good to pass up. Others believe the Browns will try to upgrade this unit in free agency, hoping to land someone like Santonio Holmes or Carolina's Steve Smith.

But before Cleveland looks to upgrade what many fans and media consider to be a mediocre unit, it must first assess the talent currently on the roster. Carlton Mitchell is just as big a receiver as Green and while he may not be as flashy, maybe all he needs is a chance.

With the Browns switching to the West Coast offense, this is one guy worth taking a second look at.
