NFL Rumors: Brian Westbrook Would 'Love To Be Back in Philly' With Eagles

Kyle VassaloMar 7, 2011

Brian Westbrook played eight seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Last season, he spent most of the year riding the bench behind Frank Gore on the San Francisco 49ers. When Gore went down and Westbrook stepped in, he proved he still had some football left in the tank.

On March 6th, Westbrook told CSN Philly that he would "love to be back in Philly."

The Eagles featured one of the most explosive offenses in the entire NFL last season. Would they really want to bring in an aging legend like Westbrook?

Last season, the Eagles utilized the screen game so much, it almost became their run game. LeSean McCoy turned slip screens into huge gainers. This forced defenses to account for him underneath every single play, much like they would for a dangerous rush attack.

Westbrook's return to Philadelphia would provide them with a more stable run game. They obviously wouldn't need to stray away from what they are already doing, but he gives them the opportunity to be even more versatile.

Westbrook can block, pick up tough yards and catch out of the backfield. He is a perfect fit in nearly every offense.

With the way Michael Vick plays, it's almost a necessity to have a back like Westbrook on roster. His reckless abandon is conducive with injury.

One bad play and the Eagles will have a much less dynamic offense.

If Kevin Kolb leaves town, the Eagles almost have to bring in a more traditional back. Having Vick simply screen teams to death, extend plays with his legs and bomb the ball down the field is no longer going to be the offense if he goes down.

If Kolb is not an option on the roster next season, the Eagles are going to have to scrap their entire offense and cut the playbook in half.

This is a great selling point for Westbrook. He would give them a veteran presence and help them whether the storm until Vick returned to the lineup.

At this point in his career, it seems as though Westbrook is probably comfortable with just being a contributor. He didn't see overwhelming action when he was on the market last season, so assuming he is going to request a monster deal is probably inaccurate.

If the Eagles are able to get him at a bargain rate, it will be a positive move for all parties involved. Fans are receptive to him in Philadelphia and he provides veteran leadership in a locker room he is already comfortable in.

Westbrook to Philadelphia certainly has the makings of a possible scenario.
