MLB Daily Market Wrap Up: NL East Race Leads Day

Dan FabrizioSep 22, 2008

Moving Today's Market

It's a slow day on the schedule as baseball enters its final week of the regular season. The last week of the season usually means pitching changes and rookie starters, and today is no different. These combined with the addition of football to the marketplace is decreasing the action on tonight's games. A pair of teams battling for the NL East crown each send rookie hurlers to the mound in their respective match ups. The Phillies send rookie J.A. Happ (1-0, 4.24 ERA) up against the Braves and Jair Jurrjens (13-10, 3.72). Philadelphia is receiving 73% of moneyline wagers at home, and the line has moved in that direction. The Phillies opened as -150 favorites at Pinnacle, but are currently sitting at -165. There were Smart Money plays triggered on the Braves earlier in the day by BetJamaica and TradeSports after the line climbed to the Phillies -160 then dropped back to -149 against the betting percentage.

The Mets are chasing the Phillies for the NL East lead, and they send rookie Jonathon Niese (1-0, 4.09) to the Shea Stadium mound against the NL Central Champion Cubs and Jason Marquis (10-9, 4.39). The moneyline bets are pretty evenly split, and they have been since the line opened at Pinnacle with the Mets as -142 favorites. Even with the teams receiving close support from bettors, the line dropped to New York -135 this morning before climbing back up to its current line with the Mets as -145 favorites.
