Brett Favre: Projecting Odds On Favre's First Post-Retirement Gig
Brett Favre heads off into the sunset. Granted, this is his third time leaving the game, so excuse me for walking carefully into this article.
Life will be hard without the ol' gunslinger. It has been two decades since we had a Brett Favre-less league, so some evolution will be in order. But our loss pales in comparison to the heartache that must be going on in Favre.
It was abundantly clear that Favre wanted to play football and nothing else. How else do you explain his refusal to give up the game three years ago?
Now he is left with the question of what's next? Well there are a few endeavors up to him at the moment. Here are the odds on each of them.
10. Write a Tell-All Book
1 of 10
Brett Favre released a book in 2004 titled Favre that went into detail about the quarterback's background and upbringing.
I think it goes without saying that it greatly needs an update. The final years of his career were stacked with scandals and drama. He went through three teams and took center stage in a sex scandal that is yet to be resolved.
A book describing the events from Favre's eyes would sell like gangbusters. Favre would like to keep his dirty laundry a secret for now. There is no shot that he revisits the last few years until he is loved by all NFL fans again.
The name of the game is to reshape his image, not throw more dirt on it.
Odds: 100:1
9. Southern Mississippi Gig
2 of 10
Brett Favre was a legend at Southern Miss.
The program would welcome back their son with open arms. There is a multitude of jobs he could manage for college. His name and face would be a driving force for recruitment.
But I doubt Favre has the passion for the daily grind of college football. If he wanted to be entrenched in the nuances of football on an hourly basis, he would start at the top. This job would be too much work for little acknowledgement.
That is not a job Favre is apt to take on.
Odds: 50:1
8. High School Coach
3 of 10
Brett Favre has spent the last couple of offseasons getting prepared at Oak Grove High School in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. It is close to his home and the small unassuming nature of his visits call to him.
Perhaps Favre would rather stay home and take it easy. The best move may be helping out kids at a much lower level than the NFL. He can stay out of the media glare and still be close to the game he loves.
There is no doubt that Oak Grove would jump at the chance to have Favre offer up words of wisdom to their young athletes.
Odds: 30:1
7. NFL Coach
4 of 10
Now, I am not talking about a head coaching position. That takes an extreme amount of time and grooming to be successful. But Favre could be useful as an assistant or quarterbacks coach. The man did just do it for 20 years.
But the problem here is that Favre had never let on that he would like to coach when he was done gun-slinging. You also have Aaron Rodger's note that Favre rarely helped him out when he was a backup.
That does not sound like mentor material to me. He should start small. Coach Newton; one pupil may give him a sense of whether he wants to proceed on a grander scale.
Odds: 25:1
6. Dancing With The Stars
5 of 10
Former NFL quarterback Kurt Warner has some ideas on where Favre should head as his playing days end, and that is on the next season of Dancing With the Stars.
Allow me to be the first to say, I don't think so. Favre is more cowboy than gifted dancer. Granted, his appearance would immediately make me a fan of the show. I just don't see the connection.
There is the fact that Favre does like the limelight. That may be the only reason he takes to prime time on the dancing show.
Odds: 15:1
5. Return To The Field
6 of 10
Never say never. Favre has fooled us too many times for us to not be savvy to his game. The itch to play will return; it always does.
The only real speed bump to his return is that no team would want him. Favre could have very well overstayed his welcome. He showed no signs of being a top quarterback in 2010 and health concerns finally sneaked their head into his resume.
As we all know, one team will bite if the line is cast. So a Favre return may not be probable, but it is far from impossible
Odds: 10:1
4. Broadcast Booth
7 of 10
This is where all the greats go after retirement. Regardless of if you can intelligently speak the English language or not, there is a spot for you with any number of media outlets if you happen to be a quarterback legend.
Terry Bradshaw rarely makes any sense, yet he has a full-time gig when the season starts. Favre would be a perfect addition to any two-man team. With Favre as the third in the booth, the broadcast gets an instant boost of credibility.
He may not have the chops to be a complete color commentator, but adding insight as a third in the box might suit him well. The networks will come calling; will he answer?
Odds: 7:1
3. Enjoy Retirement
8 of 10
Every single time Favre retired, he uttered the same reason for his departure: exhaustion. The quarterback was mentally and physically drained.
That is why he is more likely to rest on his big fat laurels for the foreseeable future. For some it is a curse to wake up and not have anything to do. They take up golf. They travel. They live.
But Favre may just want to sleep. If he truly is mentally tapped out, perhaps a vacation from the world is his best option.
The coaching gigs or broadcast offers will still be there. But it may be time for Favre to just get some much needed rest. Twenty years of playing without a day off can wear a body out.
Odds: 3:1
2. Tend To His Other Endeavors
9 of 10
Brett Favre has never been just a football player. He has a wealth of other endeavours that occupy his time. Now he can finally become much more hands-on with their daily operations.
Favre founded the Brett Favre Fourward Foundation in 1996. It is a charity organization that raises over $2 million a year for charities in his home state of Mississippi. The organization hosts, among other things, a golf tournament, dinners and a celebrity softball game.
Favre also has close ties to the The Deanna Favre Hope Foundation. That is an organization run by his wife to raise awareness for breast cancer. Something tells me that Favre owes his old lady a favor. He would do well to get out and spread the good word for her charity organization.Ā
If all that weren't enough, the man has a steakhouse in Green Bay to tend to. There is already plenty on this guy's plate.
Odds: 3:1
1. Tutor Cam Newton
10 of 10
Cam Newton recently stated that he admires Brett Favre and would love to have him as a mentor. This is a no-brainer for Favre.
This is the easiest way for him to resurrect his image from vilified loser to vaunted hero. The last we saw of Favre, he was a hobbled mess. He was the quarterback of a bad team and a ghost of his former self.
Favre needs to remind fans that he is a winner. The best way to do that is turn another quarterback into one. If Newton is successful, there may be bigger and better jobs waiting for him in the NFL.
Odds: 2:1
