Brett Favre: 10 Reasons No. 4 Should Stay Retired

Alex CurtlandJun 7, 2018

"I know I can still play... I'm just not sure I want to anymore."

A teary-eyed Brett Favre delivered this message to the Green Bay Packers in 2008. Yet, to no one's surprise, that was not the end for Favre.

One season with the New York Jets and two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings later, Favre is retired again.

Here are ten reasons "Number Four" should stay retired this time around.

1. Favre Should Work For The Packers

According to an article in todays Huffington Post, Packers president Mike Murphy would welcome Favre back in some capacity with the organization.

According to Murphy, "At the appropriate time, we'll reach out to him."

A position in football would certainly help Favre stay around the game he loves, and he certainly has the football knowledge to fill an upper management position.

The only question is whether Packers fans will be ready to welcome him back.

2. Or Find Work Elsewhere

2 of 10

Favre could also try to find another job within football, such as an analyst or a commentator.

Favre's waffling over his retirement and his need to always want to be in the spotlight have hurt his public image, but he is a very funny person.

I could see him making the transition to broadcasting very easily.

A television career is also not out of the question.

At the very least, I'm sure there are plenty more Wrangler commercials he could star in.

3. Age and Injury Concerns

Since the NFC Championship Game two years ago against the Saints, Favre has been a punching bag for NFL defenders.

He was hurt this year against the Bills, forcing him out of that game and the next one as well, ending his consecutive starts streak.

He returned against the Bears, but only to be knocked out again.  As of now, that was Favre's last game.

He should make sure that remains his last game.

At 41, Favre's best days are behind him, and taking the field again would only put himself in danger of further injury.

4. Off-Field Personal Issues

After the Jenn Sterger sexting incident, Favre has a lot of work to do repairing his relationship with his family.

He needs to prove to his wife that he is a faithful husband, and show honest remorse for his wrongful actions.

Playing football will only get in the way of this goal, and right now Favre should spend all his energy fixing this problem.

5. The Market Is Not There

Ten years ago, Favre would have been the most sought after free agent on the market.

Now, it would be a shock for any team to sign him, even as a backup.

Perhaps the most obvious reason for Favre to stay retired is that no team wants him.

That's not a knock against Favre.

But realistically, no team will touch a beat up 41 year old QB with as many issues as Favre.

6. The Chance To Finally Do The Right Thing

In the real world, if you walk away from your job, you're most likely not going to get it back, no matter how much you beg and plead.

Favre has always been above this rule, and (albeit after many failed attempts) he finally has another chance to do the right thing.

I believe in sticking to my promises.  So, if Favre said he's retired, he should stay retired.

It's Favre's attitude that he is above the system that has angered so many NFL fans and put a lasting stain on his public image.

It's never to late to make changes.  Favre should start now by doing what he said he would and stay retired.

7. What's He Got To Prove?

7 of 10

There's no denying Favre is a great, HOF QB.

He holds the record in every statistical passing category, has the all-time wins record for a QB, and has the longest consecutive starts streak in NFL history.

He also has a Superbowl ring.  Favre accomplished pretty much everything he could during his NFL career.

Unless his love of the game is that strong (or his ego is that big), Favre should have nothing left to prove on the field, no analysts left to impress, no records left to break.

He should do the smart thing, keep his body out of harm's way, and stay retired.

8. This Season's Result

Two years ago, Favre was a fourth quarter interception away from the Superbowl.

How things can change in only a year.

Favre's eleven touchdown's last year were the lowest of his career, and his interception total jumped from seven to 19.

The stats last year show that Favre's age and health finally caught up to him.

There's no shame in getting old.

Based on this years result, Favre should face facts and actually hang up the cleats this time.

9. Does Favre Still Even Want To Play?

Favre made an interesting remark when he said he was coming back to the Vikings this season.

He did not say his love of the game compelled him to return.

He did not say one last shot at the Superbowl was too enticing to pass up.

He said "I owe it to my teammates," to return.

To me, that sounds like a man who never really wanted to come back in the first place.

While I believe his intentions were honorable, Favre never should have come back if his head was not in the game.

After last season's train wreck, it's hard to believe Favre would want to come back again.

10. Brett Should Do What's Best For Brett

10 of 10

Favre has been a legend in this league for years, but every great one reaches that point where it's time to call it quits.

Whatever his reasons for staying this long are trivial.

Favre had a great career, and in time people will look at the good and start to forget most of the bad.

As they say, time heals all wounds.

Favre should do what's best for his health, his family, and NFL fans around the league- stay retired.

Because I don't think I can deal with another summer of "Favre Watch" on ESPN.  No one can.
