MLB Power Rankings: The Chicago Cubs and 10 Teams with Money Left to Spend
Rafael Soriano headlines the market of remaining free agents this MLB offseason.
The biggest hitters left on the market are all aging stars like Jim Thome, Vladimir Guerrero and Manny Ramirez.
There are also plenty of pitchers on the market, including Jeff Francis and Brad Penny.
But the number of teams with enough money to sign some of these players is starting to drop off. If teams haven't made moves by now, they might not make moves at all.
However, there are still a few teams, like the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets, with money to spend.
Here's a list of 10 teams that could still make some noise this offseason.
10. Kansas City Royals
1 of 10
The Royals should be going with a youth movement.
Yet despite shipping Zack Greinke to Milwaukee, they've signed Jeff Francoeur and Melky Cabrera, two veteran outfielders.
Who knows what the Royals have planned?
But apparently they do have at least a little bit of money to spend.
9. Houston Astros
2 of 10
The Astros shelled out a contract to Bill Hall, an aging outfielder/third baseman.
With no Roy Oswalt and no Lance Berkman, they probably still have some money to spend.
They need to bring in a veteran pitcher to work with their young pitching staff.
8. Atlanta Braves
3 of 10
The biggest thing the Braves have done in free agency this offseason is pick up the option for shortstop Alex Gonzalez's contract.
They did trade for Dan Uggla though to shore up second base.
But, for a team that made the playoffs last year, they are still a couple pieces away from being legitimate contenders this year.
Look for them to spend a little bit of money to add some veteran backups.
7. Seattle Mariners
4 of 10
The Mariners have grabbed Miguel Olivo and Jack Cust this offseason, but I wouldn't be surprised if they signed a couple more players.
This team is in desperate need of offensive help. While Cust and Olivo are good starts, they'll need to do more.
6. Toronto Blue Jays
5 of 10
The Blue Jays have done virtually nothing this offseason, while the Yankees and Red Sox have been spending and spending, getting better and better.
Toronto isn't like the Marlins or Rays; they will spend money to stay competitive.
They still won't compete with the Red Sox or Yankees, but they can still field an exciting team.
5. Texas Rangers
6 of 10
The Rangers did just shell out a huge contract to Adrian Beltre.
However, I don't think they're done yet. With a new ownership group in place, this team has the potential to spend quite a bit of money.
Look for them to add a pitcher or two and maybe a first baseman if one is available.
They should also re-sign Vlad Guerrero.
4. Chicago Cubs
7 of 10
The Cubs have raided the Rays this offseason, signing Carlos Pena and trading for Matt Garza.
So while they're probably done plundering Tampa, they probably aren't done tinkering with their lineup.
They aren't satisfied with the way 2010 played out, so look for them to be active right up until pitchers and catchers report.
3. New York Mets
8 of 10
The only thing the Mets have done this offseason that's notable is pick up Jose Reyes' $11 million option.
We all know they have money left to spend, so don't be surprised if they go after Rafael Soriano or some of the other free agents left on the market.
It's really surprising they haven't done more this offseason.
2. Los Angeles Angels
9 of 10
The Angels lost the Carl Crawford sweepstakes.
The Angels lost the Cliff Lee sweepstakes.
And the Angels lost the Adrian Beltre sweepstakes.
But they won the Scott Downs sweepstakes.
That won't be enough for Angel fans, who will be calling for their GM's head if the team doesn't do more this offseason.
1. San Francisco Giants
10 of 10
The World Series champion San Francisco Giants locked down Aubrey Huff, their biggest priority this offseason.
But they still have some money left over and could still use some more guys on offense.
They rely heavily on a young pitching staff, so improving their offense would take a lot of pressure off those young guys.
