San Francisco 49ers Next Quarterback: Could Kyle Orton Be the Starter in 2011?
So the San Francisco 49ers signed a new head coach last week, what's next?
1.) Adjust any coaches on the staff Jim Harbaugh does not approve of.
2.) Finally find a franchise quarterback, or at least an upgrade "band-aid" until there is a better option.
In a recent, somewhat bizarre, interview TMZ had with 49ers tight end Vernon Davis, he revealed that the Niners may be interested in signing Kyle Orton if he is released by the Denver Broncos. From there he repeated that he loved Orton, and does not miss Mike Singletary. This is interesting simply because some fans may have assumed that since Singletary "got Davis to perform at his highest level," Davis would disagree with Singletary's firing.
Orton would be interesting if brought into the Bay Area because at times in the 2010 season he appeared to be the next big thing leading to a one year extension. However, a few weeks of poor play, injury and Tebowmania have left Orton out of Denver's future plans.
Also, in a preview of the T.Ocho show, Davis was on the phone saying that bringing in Donovan McNabb would be tremendous. It appears that Davis wants a veteran quarterback not named Alex Smith to be throwing him the ball in 2011.
How Will the 49ers Find Their QB for 2011?
Jim Harbaugh has a lot of options for the quarterback position next year, and I think the best fit for the Niners on the market would be Kevin Kolb of the Philadelphia Eagles. However, unless tension heats up, and he begins to bash the organization, the Eagles reported asking price of two first round picks is high. Not sure 'Frisco would be willing to give up their seventh overall selection for Kolb, let alone another first rounder.
The 49ers off-season has already been an interesting one, and with the QB hunt coming up in near months, it should get a whole lot more interesting.
