The Oakland Raiders Cut the Cable: Join In On the NFL Coaching Controversy

Tom EdringtonJan 5, 2011

The Oakland Raiders have dug themselves yet another black hole.

Al Davis, in his infinite wisdom, decided the latest move in his 2011 version of a Commitment To Excellence, should be to show head coach Tom Cable the door.

Davis decided to forget the fact that this team of his was making progress, it's simply time to join the crowd and begin yet another version of As Al Davis' World Turns.

And things are flying fast and furious around Raiders headquarters as we speak. Seems once Cable was informed that his contract would not be renewed, some pesky source—The San Francisco Chronicle, no less—proclaimed that Raider offensive coordinator Hue Jackson would be the new guy in charge.

The only problem is that Davis says it isn't so, the Raider front office says it isn't so and Jackson himself says it isn't so.

So right now, it isn't so, is it?

Seems like Al Davis simply can't help himself. He collects coaches they way Jon Gruden collected quarterbacks when he was with Tampa Bay. It's been Gruden, Bill Callahan, Norv Turner, Art Shell, Lane Kiffin and then Cable that Davis has hired and fired.

Now here's where it gets funny out there in Silver and Black land.

Seems the punter Shane Lechler, demands to know what's going on. He's called the executive offices and to his shock and dismay, no one's returning his phone calls.

Lechler is a fan of Cable and calls Davis' latest move "a huge setback" for the Raiders.

Now who ever cared what a punter had to say?

"I just want to know what the hell's going on," Lechler pleaded.

Well, he's certainly not alone.

People have wanted to know what the hell's been going on with the Raiders for a long, long time.

And Al Davis simply hasn't been willing to tell us.
