Mike Holmgren: When Will There Be a 'Big Show' in Cleveland?

Tom EdringtonJan 4, 2011

Mike Holmgren is still a little confused when it comes to this team president business with the Cleveland Browns.

Holmgren, the NFL's "Big Show" knows how to send out mixed signals with the best of 'em.

He made his move and dropped the ax on Eric Mangini on Monday, then said he's not going to coach the Brownies, but then came up with some really good mixed-signal mumbo-jumbo.

"I am also a coach and will always be a coach," says the team pres. "To tell you right now that I would never coach again here or any place, wouldn't be honest."

Bowl us over, Big Show.

Sounds like he's got some really mixed emotions over this coaching thingy, doesn't it?

But wait, if that's not confusing enough, try this on:

"I probably won't coach again, but I won't rule anything out."

The Big Show just opened the escape hatch. He drew back the curtain and hidden there in the back offices of the Browns complex was the escape pod, reminds you of that one they have on Air Force One for the President. Although this president is supposed to be happy being just the president but it seems like he's not sure.

Can you follow all that?

Mike Holmgren was hired to be the president, acts like the president, then says he's really a coach, always will be a coach, says he won't tell us he'll never coach again, then dips into the Can of Contradiction and says he probably won't but then won't rule it out.

Take a deep breath on that one.

Which is it?

The fact if, if some confused owner (no, we didn't say Daniel Snyder) wants to pop up and overpay the Big Show to call the plays, then maybe, just maybe there's a Big Show in some owner's future.

Or maybe not.

Holmgren says he's serious about finding a new coach for Cleveland and serious enough to say it won't be him.

He also said money won't be an issue with hiring a new coach.

And that should be music to Jon Gruden's ears.

You see, Gruden has a long history with Holmgren, so long that Gruden used to be an errand boy for the Big Show. And that's a long time ago.

So will the Big Show call on his former errand boy to take over the abysmal situation there in sunny Cleveland?

That's the $6 million question.

And remember, money's no object.
