Mike Holmgren: Arguments For and Against Coaching the Cleveland Browns

Chris TrapassoJan 3, 2011

Mike Holmgren is looking for a new coach for the Cleveland Browns with the firing of Eric Mangini, and in the end of his search, he just might be the best candidate for the job.

Some would disagree with that statement.

Either way, let's look at the pros and cons of Mike Holmgren coaching the Browns next year...

Why he should coach the team

First things first, Holmgren's already a part of the franchise and has had a say in the majority of the current roster. He's evaluated all the players so he's familiar with what each guy can do and could make a seamless transition to the sideline from a personnel standpoint.

He's got a pretty impressive track record obviously during his long tenures in Green Bay and Seattle, and wasn't sent packing by either team.

Steve Young, Brett Favre and Matt Hasslebeck are all younger signal callers that grew under Holmgren, and Browns fans would like to think Colt McCoy could be the next.

Holmgren's an ideal candidate because after Cleveland dealt with a head coach with little experience in Eric Mangini, you'd expect the Browns will be looking for someone who is comfortable on the sideline.

He's hasn't ruled out becoming the team's next head coach and there certainly are good reasons why he'll take the reigns in 2011 for the Browns.

Why he shouldn't coach the team

He'll have to relinquish his role as team president which could have a negative ripple effect on the Browns, especially in the middle of Cleveland's rebuilding process.

Holmgren is 62, which by today's standards in the NFL is ancient, and you'd have to wonder how much longer he'd be willing to man the sidelines.

The Browns are far from a contender at this point, and the 49ers and Seahawks all were in the upper echelon of their divisions while Holmgren was around.

With the Steelers and Ravens in the Browns in the AFC North it won't be easy for Cleveland to crack the playoffs.

Only time will tell, but it's a distinct possibility.
