In fact, it appears his storied NFL career will end on a whimper, hardly matching the giant shadow he cast over the league for the past 20 years.
For some, many in fact, Favre can't go away soon enough. His perceived constant desire for the spotlight, unwillingness to retire and the Jenn Sterger fiasco have caused many former fans to turn their backs on the old gunslinger.
Until this season, Favre had stood the test of time and become an institution of the game.
Regardless of personal feelings, no one can deny Favre's place as one of the all-time great quarterbacks in league history.
Favre had been chasing one last championship run since his Packers lost to the Giants in the 2007 NFC Championship game. He spent one disappointing season in New York with the Jets both on the field and in the texting universe.
That was followed by his arrival in Minnesota, the place he wanted to play since his falling out with Packers' GM Ted Thompson.
He experienced a dream-like scenario with the Vikings last year, in what proved to be the best season of his career statistically.
However, in the end, he was unable to make one final play to help the Vikes reach the Super Bowl.
We all know this season is a far cry from what Favre was hoping for when he jumped on the plane from Hattiesburg to Minneapolis, but no one should think this has had an adverse effect on his Hall of Fame career.
For every story of drama or scandal from Favre, there are ten that have cemented his place and status in the game alongside Montana, Bradshaw, Elway and all the other greats of the game.
His statistics (both good and bad) are second-to-none and other than the "sexting" scandal, he has nothing to apologize for over his playing career. He played the game like no one before him and very few of us will likely ever see another like him again.
Laying on the turf at TCF Bank Stadium wasn't how things were supposed to end for Favre. Many predicted it would end this way, and not with a Super Bowl appearance as Favre and Viking fans had hoped for.
Though the final chapter of the Favre saga may leave a sour taste in the mouths of the viewing public, it won't erase the greatness of the book as a whole.
Does Favre have his faults? Without a doubt, yes. Was playing this season a mistake? Unfortunately, it was.
The fact of the matter is Favre's faults and mistakes are what made him so enduring and a magnetic figure to watch even to non-fans of the sport.
Love him or hate him, it really doesn't matter in the big scheme of things, but one thing is for certain—you'll never forget him.
