NFL Playoff Scenarios, Predicting the Teams: Green Bay Packers In or Out?
Tom Brady and the New England Patriots are going to get the No. 1 seed in the AFC and Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons will be the No. 1 seed in the NFC.
But, beyond that, not much has been decided in the playoff picture.
There are still teams fighting for their division titles, like Peyton Manning's Indianapolis Colts and Maurice Jones-Drew's Jacksonville Jaguars.
Then, there's the battle for wild card slots between Aaron Rodgers' Green Bay Packers team and Eli Manning's Giants.
So, how will things play out these last two weeks?
Here's my prediction for how the No. 1 through No. 6 seeds in each conference will end up.
AFC No. 1: New England Patriots
1 of 12
Tom Brady and the Patriots have rolled through this regular season.
They're 12-2 right now and have a legitimate shot of finishing 14-2.
With a game against the Bills and a game against the Dolphins remaining, the Pats won't lose their No. 1 seed.
AFC No. 2: Pittsburgh Steelers
2 of 12
The Steelers are 11-4 after a Thursday night victory over the Carolina Panthers.
They have one more game left, against the Cleveland Browns.
Troy Polamalu might sit out that game as well, trying to get healthy for the playoffs.
Getting the No. 2 seed and a first round bye will give him even more time to rest.
AFC No. 3: Kansas City Chiefs
3 of 12
The Chiefs are 6-0 at home and have two home games left on their schedule.
One game is against the Tennessee Titans and the other is against the Oakland Raiders.
I like the Chiefs' chances of going 8-0 at home this season and earning the No. 3 seed in the AFC.
AFC No. 4: Indianapolis Colts
4 of 12
Peyton Manning and the Colts have the exact opposite schedule of the Chiefs.
They play the Raiders this week and the Titans in Week 17.
Manning and the Colts will win both games to hold of the Jacksonville Jaguars and be the AFC South champions.
AFC No. 5: Baltimore Ravens
5 of 12
The Ravens and the Jets are both 10-4 right now.
The Ravens beat the Jets in Week 1, so they hold that tiebreaker.
The Jets also have a tougher schedule, so the Ravens will most likely be the No. 5 seed.
AFC No. 6: New York Jets
6 of 12
Mark Sanchez and the Jets have a tough game against the Chicago Bears this week.
The Bears are still alive for a first round bye in the NFC, so they won't be resting any starters quite yet.
Even if the Jets win out, though, the Ravens have games against the Browns and Bengals remaining—I don't expect them to lose.
NFC No. 1: Atlanta Falcons
7 of 12
Matt Ryan and the Falcons are going to have home field advantage in the NFC.
Since they are nearly unbeatable at home, the road to the Super Bowl will likely go through Atlanta.
But, this Monday night, the New Orleans Saints will be coming to Atlanta in what will amount to one of the Falcons' biggest challenges of 2010.
NFC No. 2: Philadelphia Eagles
8 of 12
The Eagles have a game against the Vikings this week and a game against the Cowboys next week.
Against both of those under-performing teams, the Eagles should finish with a 12-4 record.
The Bears have the tiebreaker by beating the Eagles earlier this season, but they also have a tougher remaining schedule.
NFC No. 3: Chicago Bears
9 of 12
As I said before, the Bears have a tough remaining schedule.
This week, they play host to the Jets.
Then, they close out the season in Green Bay against a desperate Packer team.
I wouldn't be surprised if they lost at least one of those games.
NFC No. 4: St. Louis Rams
10 of 12
The Rams have two very important division games ahead of them.
This week, the San Francisco 49ers come to St. Louis.
Then, the Rams close out the season by heading to Seattle for a game that will likely decide the winner of the NFC West.
The Rams defense is going to get the job done, and they'll make it to the playoffs with an 8-8 record.
NFC No. 5: New Orleans Saints
11 of 12
The Saints will be the No. 5 seed in the NFC even if they lose this Monday in Atlanta.
They should win their Week 17 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Drew Brees and his teammates will be a tough matchup for the Rams, a team that they've already beaten this season.
NFC No. 6: New York Giants
12 of 12
As a Packer fan, I really hope I'm wrong about this pick.
But, looking at things from an unbiased standpoint, the Giants have the edge.
If the Giants beat the Packers this week, they are in.
But, even if they lose, they can still get in the playoffs by beating Washington in Week 17 and having the Bears beat the Packers.
So, though the Packers control their own destiny, beating the Giants and Bears in back-to-back weeks is no easy task.
That's why I'm going to go ahead and pencil in the Giants as the No. 6 seed in the NFC.
