Despite head coach Mike Singletary trying to keep it a secret until Sunday, word has reportedly gotten out that Troy Smith will replace Alex Smith as the team's starting quarterback in Week 16.

NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reported via Twitter that the San Francisco 49ers have decided to go back to "the other Smith" (Troy) as the team prepares to face the St. Louis Rams on the road.

Troy Smith had his best game as a pro in a victory at home over the Rams in Week 10, where he threw for over 350 passing yards.

Despite a great game in his return to action against Seattle in Week 14, where he threw three touchdowns and no interceptions in a win, Alex Smith will be benched in favor of Troy Smith after being unable to generate any offense in a loss to the San Diego Chargers in Week 15.

It's clear at this point, and quite possibly has been clear for a while, that the decision-making in San Francisco has led to neither quarterback having a long leash or a firm backing. The team has now switched quarterbacks three times during the season, although once due to injury.

The 49ers will go to battle with Troy Smith under center in Week 16, with an unlikely still reachable division championship on the line.
