Vince Young: Tennessee Titans Quarterback Has Another Meltdown

Andrew RobesonNov 22, 2010

Vince Young's roller coaster career with the Tennessee Titans took another dip on Sunday with a chaotic scene in the locker-room.

How else do you explain safety Michael Griffin trying to chase Young down as he stormed out of the locker-room?

Details are scarce but here is what we know: Young hurt his finger and was pulled in favor of third-string quarterback Rusty Smith.

After that, the details are a little less firm.

However, its believed that Young wanted back in the game, only to have Jeff Fisher take his job from him.

So what does this mean?

Young Has Been Here Before

First, let's rewind to 2008.

Vince Young threw two interceptions, then refused to return the field.

Later that day Young went out of contact for several hours.

Several news agencies reported that the Titans were afraid Young may be suicidal, and Tennessee patrolmen were told to keep an eye out for Young's car.

This situation obviously has some glaring differences.

Young wanted to play this time, and wasn't allowed to. But the craziness that is Vince Young has been seen before.

Both incidents point to a low level of maturity that is not acceptable for an NFL quarterback.

Tennessee's Playoff Hopes

Despite losing three games in a row, the Titans are just a game out of first place in their division.

But, can they win without Young?

In games that Young has taken all the snaps from center, the Titans are 3-1, when he hasn't, the Titans are 2-4.

Pretty different numbers, and what they say is that without Young the Titans three-game slide could continue if Young isn't under center.

Don't get me wrong, Young isn't the NFL's best quarterback, but the guy finds a way to win and is a two-time Pro Bowler.

And he is better than Kerry Collins and Rusty Smith easily.

Jeff Fisher or Vince Young?

When push comes to shove, will the Titans organization stand behind their erratic quarterback or their trustworthy coach?

Hopefully the wording of that question gave you the hint that the Titans will side with Fisher every day of every year.

Fisher has held his job for 16 years, which is practically unheard of in the National Football League.

The Titans are obviously comfortable with him running the show, and for them to undercut him at this point would be borderline foolish.

Crazy quarterbacks are a dime a dozen in the NFL, heck if the Titans miss Young they can go get JaMarcus Russell.

But there is only one Fisher.

If Young does get released, he will have no trouble finding a job.

Despite his erratic past, there are three teams that would kill for a quarterback with his skill and pedigree.

Miami Dolphins: Injuries to Chad Henne and Chad Pennington have left the Dolphins desperate at quarterback. Combine that with the fact that they are no longer convinced Henne is the quarterback of the future and Young could be a fit to bring his talents to South Beach.

Carolina Panthers: Don't they always need a quarterback? I can barely keep track, are they on their third or fourth of the year?

Arizona Cardinals: Unless they can get Kurt Warner out of retirement, they need an upgrade at quarterback very soon to have any chance next season.

The Dolphins might be the best fit if they are willing to give Young a chance to win the starting job next year, since both the Panthers and Cardinals will be in position to draft a quarterback next year.

But, that all depends if 'Phins management is actually ready to throw the towel in on Henne, and if the Titans even release Young.
