Browns vs. Jaguars: Cleveland Shows Lack of WR Talent in Loss To Jacksonville
The Cleveland Browns went to Florida to face the Jacksonville Jaguars, but will be coming home to Cleveland with another loss to add to their 3-7 2010 NFL record.
Both the Browns and the Jaguars are similar when it comes to talent, or lack thereof, at the wide receiver position.
But the Browns hurt themselves by not being able to throw down field during this game.
Not being able to throw down field caused the Jaguars to break down the Browns' offensive line and sack quarterback Colt McCoy six times, and many of those sacks were coverage sacks.
Without playmaker Josh Cribbs, the Browns had to rely on Mohamed Massaquoi (who is having a sophomore slump), Brian Robiskie (who just can't get open) and Chansi Stuckey (who is not a starter and is having a good year as a possession/slot receiver).
McCoy's favorite targets were once again his bruising running back Peyton Hillis and one of his tight ends, Evan Moore.
Hillis caught six passes for 95 yards and one touchdown while Moore caught three for 69 yards and a stellar 23 yards-per-catch average.
To give Massaquoi credit, he has been playing much better since being reinserted into the starting lineup after a concussion in Week 7. In the last three games, Massaquoi has caught 10 passes for 117 yards and one touchdown, but those numbers still speak volumes in his struggles, too.
Browns fans have been calling for the Browns to make Georgia receiver A.J. Green into their 2011 draft plans if he decides to leave college early.
Fans are also screaming to move Moore over to receiver, since his height is a mismatch for many defenders and each week he continues to develop into a real deep threat as the only player on the roster averaging over 20 yards per catch for this season.
It is now obvious that the Browns need to rebuild their receiver group for next season because the current group just can't get it done on the outside.
Whether it is by drafting a prospect like Green or signing a younger and more established receiver in free agency, the Browns upper management needs to get McCoy weapons on the outside, otherwise he will not be able to develop into a great quarterback either.
Time and time again, other teams have found good receiver talent for a young quarterback. You can look at the Atlanta Falcons, who gave Matt Ryan Roddy White, or you can even look in the AFC North division, where the Baltimore Ravens have added to both the receiver and tight end positions to get Joe Flacco the weapons he needs to win.
If the Browns don't get some new receivers this offseason, then they will not be able to get over the hump of competing in a very tough division.
On a final bright note, the Browns lost veteran starting cornerback Eric Wright to a calf injury to his left leg, but 2010 rookie first rounder Joe Haden stepped in and looked explosive in coverage, along with grabbing his third interception of the season.
Fellow defensive rookie T.J. Ward picked up two interceptions of his own, and both look to be the building blocks of a very good secondary for the Browns defense.
