Troy Smith was recently named starter in place of the injured quarterback Alex Smith. Smith was selected to start over then back up quarterback David Carr. Troy Smith may win or lose the game, but he will have his name etched into the San Francisco 49ers record book by becoming the first African-American quarterback to start for the 49ers.
In the 49ers' record books, there are records for Joe Montana, Steve Young and Jeff Garcia. Adding Smith to the record books will have a different ring to it. Montana, Young and Garcia all enjoyed great statistical seasons playing quarterback for the 49ers. Smith will enter the record books as the first African-American quarterback to start for the 49ers.
This comes to show that there America is still growing as a country. It is wonderful to see this organization take a chance on a kid like Troy Smith. Troy may never lead the 49ers to a Super Bowl. He may not even start after Alex Smith comes back from injury, but being apart of history is something that cannot be taken away from him.
The 49ers are 1-6 and they have their backs against the wall. A trip to London with a new quarterback may be refreshing for the team. Smith is not a pure passer, but he is a locker room guy who always had a good rapport with his teammates. With Smith's mobility and strong arm he may provide a spark to the offense.
Today Smith did just that by throwing for one touchdown, running for a touchdown, and leading the 49ers to a victory against the Broncos . The play of the day was when Smith scrambled and fought off defenders and found Delanie Walker between Pro Bowlers Champ Bailey and Brian Dawkins.
I don't know if this is beginning of the Troy Smith era in San Francisco, but this will be a great moment that he will never forget. Being apart of history and leading his woeful team to a victory is one of few bright spots for the 49ers young season.
After the game, head coach Mike Singletary can have a normal press conference. This time he does not have to thank the opposing head coaches for beating his team, but he can thank his quarterback Troy Smith for leading the team to victory.
