Kansas City Chiefs Overcome Bad Call, Hold Jacksonville to a Field Goal at Half

Derek EstesOct 24, 2010

The Kansas City Chiefs have come out strong on both sides of the ball in today's match-up.

By halftime, the Chiefs have racked up 146 rushing yards, highlighted by a Thomas Jones 70-yard breakaway to start the game. Each of Matt Cassel's three completions have been for first downs, and the Chiefs' defense has already produced one fumble and one sack.

But the Jacksonville Jaguars won't go down without a fight, especially newly-signed quarterback Todd Bouman. Called directly from the fields of his father's farm to the starting lineup, he the Jags down only one against the hot-hand Chiefs and their boisterous home crowd.

But while Bouman has been impressive in his first game since 2005, he had a bit of help from the referees at the end of the first half.

With the Jags' Michael Sims-Walker one-on-one against Brandon Carr, a fade pass to the end zone ended with Sims-Walker pulling Carr to the ground by his jersey.

Instead of a call against the Jaguars, Kansas City found themselves looking at a pass interference penalty and a 1st and goal for Jacksonville.

Under current instant replay rules, penalties cannot be overturned by review.

Instead of folding, though, Kansas City's defense stood firm against the Jaguars. Instead of finding the end zone, Jacksonville had to settle for a field goal at the close of the half.

The Jaguars are still in the fight for this game, but Kansas City isn't about to let a poor call (or two, as Eric Berry just received a questionable pass interference call of his own) keep them from building on their surprising success this season.
