NFL BCS Power Rankings, Bleacher Report Edition: Who Is No. 1?
BleacherReport.com's first edition of the NFC BCS Rankings have been released today. What is it you ask? Well, I have put together a BCS standings formula NFL style, with a similar twist to how the college polls use it.
The goal would be to get the BCS rankings out every week if this becomes successful, so here is the breakdown of my formula.
I am using two things to decide the rankings: one is the rankings that ESPN, Sports Illustrated, CBS Sports and AOL Fan House have put out this week. The rankings from these sites do consider the strength of schedule, thus why that is not calculated into the formula.
The BCS numbers will be decided by this formula: Number of sites (four) divided by total number of the rankings added up from all four sites combined.
Just like the BCS, I am not ranking every team, In fact, I will be ranking the top 15 teams (can have a minimum of a .500 record).
Feel free to email me any of your thoughts, or talk to me on twitter: twitter.com/MattMiselis.
Enjoy!
Teams That Just Missed the Cut
17. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (.0579710145)
16. Green Bay Packers (.0606060606)
15. Kansas City Chiefs
1 of 14
BCS Ranking: 0.666666667
Polls: ESPN (13), Fan House (15), SI.com (14), CBS (18)
The Kansas City Chiefs currently lead the AFC West with a 3-2 record. One of the more surprising teams in the league just lands themselves on the list. Losing to the two best teams on your schedule isn't always a promising sign.
Last week, everything was in reverse. All phases of the Kansas City offense showed up, while the defense was nowhere to be found against the Texans.
14. Washington Redskins
2 of 14
BCS Ranking: .0689655172
Polls: ESPN (14), SI.com (15), Fan House (14), CBS (15)
The Washington Redskins are in a tight NFC East race right now. They came up short in the loss to the Colts, and have some questions that still need to be answered. The secondary needs to improve, along with the offensive line and the receiving help they are giving Donovan McNabb.
13. Miami Dolphins
3 of 14
BCS Ranking: .0740740741
Polls: ESPN (16), SI.com (13), Fan House (13), CBS (12)
The Miami Dolphins came off their bye week with a big overtime win at the Green Bay Packers. Brandon Marshall had a huge day against the Packers secondary, and now Miami takes the momentum back home just in time to host the 4-1 Steelers.
12. Chicago Bears
4 of 14
BCS Ranking: .0869565217
Polls: ESPN (12), SI.com (12), Fan House (12), CBS (10)
The Chicago Bears stand tied for the best record in the NFC. With the conference wide open, many were disappointed by the Bears being upset by the Seahawks. The offensive line really needs to improve, and many are beginning to question if the Mike Martz era isn't working out.
11. Houston Texans
5 of 14
BCS: .09552380952
Polls: ESPN (9), SI.com (11), Fan House (11), CBS (11)
The Houston Texans earned a huge comeback victory at home over the Kansas City Chiefs to stay within the tough race that is the AFC South. Though there are still questions about the Texans defense, the offense is a unit to be reckoned with and can put up points against any defense.
Despite a tough schedule this year, look for the Texans to hang around and continue to impress the voters in the polls.
10. Tennessee Titans
6 of 14
BCS Ranking: .1052631579
Polls: ESPN (8), SI.com (10), Fan House (7), CBS (13)
After the dominating 30-3 win on Monday Night Football over the Jaguars, the Titans are impressing people just in time for the BCS standings, where they crack the top 10. Chris Johnson is the most dynamic player in the league, and creates so many problems for the defense. I do believe Vince Young can do enough to create a balance attack and put up points on any foe.
More importantly, the physicality of that defense will make them a dark horse contender in 2010.
9. Atlanta Falcons
7 of 14
BCS Ranking: .1142857143
Polls: ESPN (7), SI.com (9), Fan House (10), CBS (9)
Overall, the voters seemed to get a bit discouraged with the Atlanta Falcons, and it affected their ranking. Losing quite easily by the Eagles on the road is not a good sign for a team with Super Bowl hopes. I still don't believe the defense is as good as it seems.
And if any team can contain Michael Turner, I don't have confidence of Matt Ryan's ability to carry the team on his back.
8. Philadelphia Eagles
8 of 14
BCS Ranking: .1176470588
Polls: ESPN (10), SI.com (8), Fan House (8), CBS (8)
The voters, just like most NFL experts, are jumping on the Eagles bandwagon. Kevin Kolb has taken what seems to be good quarterback controversy for Andy Reid. Losing DeSean Jackson this week is a big blow on the offense. Jeremy Maclin will be the one to carry the load for the Eagles this week.
7. New York Giants
9 of 14
BCS Ranking: .125
Polls: ESPN (11), SI.com (7), Fan House (9), CBS (5)
The New York Giants are one of the few teams that benefit greatly from the BCS rankings. Many still aren't sold on the Giants being true contenders, but apparently the polls think differently.
Eli Manning has a great deal of offensive weapons around him, and the pass rush is back to similar form of a few years ago. Still, they haven't beaten an elite team, and they have a secondary with question marks.
6. New Orleans Saints
10 of 14
BCS Ranking: .1666666667
Polls: ESPN (6), SI.com (5), Fan House (6), CBS (7)
The New Orleans Saints dominated the Bucs in a fashion that made them look like the Saints of old. The offense was firing on all cylinders, while the defense played good enough to win.
With no true favorite in the NFC, I need to wait and see how the Saints do against a contender. The only thing they can show is a loss to the Atlanta Falcons, which still concerns me quite a bit.
However, the polls have confidence in the Saints, which puts them right outside the top five of the rankings.
5. Baltimore Ravens
11 of 14
BCS Ranking: .2
Polls: ESPN (4), SI.com (6), Fan House (4), CBS (6)
The Baltimore Ravens fall a bit in the rankings with the loss at the Patriots. Questions surrounding Cam Cameron's playcalling has been a big theme this week. However, the return of Ed Reed makes this top defense even more feared than before.
They will look to release their frustrations out on the lowly Bills this Sunday.
4. Indianapolis Colts
12 of 14
BCS Ranking: .2222222222
Polls: ESPN (5), SI.com (4), Fan House (5), CBS (4)
The Colts enter the BCS Rankings at number four after the big win on the road over the Washington Redskins. As long as Peyton Manning is around, the Colts are always a threat. I am interested to see how they do against an elite team in the league, which hasn't happened yet.
The defense is still a question mark for me, but the polls are in love with Peyton Manning and the Colts.
3. New England Patriots
13 of 14
BCS Ranking: .3333333333
Polls: ESPN (3), SI.com (3), Fan House (3), CBS (3)
Post-Randy Moss era. Who needs him? Certainly not the Patriots, who earned a big comeback victory over the Baltimore Ravens in Foxboro.
The number one scoring offense in the league got hot in the second half, which led to the victory. The defense will need to improve by the end of a season if they want to last in the playoffs, but Bill Belichick is a coach I can trust getting the job done.
Tied at 1: New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers
14 of 14
BCS Ranking for both teams: 6666666667
Polls for the Jets: ESPN (2), SI.com (2), Fan House (1), CBS (1)
Polls for the Steelers: ESPN (1), SI.com (1), Fan House (2), CBS (2)
Many say the BCS Standings aren't always fair. And for the first week of the NFL BCS Standings, both the Jets and Steelers are at a deadlock tie for the top spot.
The normal formula for a tiebreaker is head to head, but these two teams don't play until later in the season.
Both have two of the top defenses in football. Normally it is "take your pick" as to which one you think is better. The Jets have Santonio Holmes and Calvin Pace, while the Steelers saw their Super Bowl-winning quarterback return to form.
Two of the polls are favoring the Jets; the others are favoring the Steelers. One of these teams is bound to get upset within the next week or two. If so, who becomes number one in the polls next week?
