NFL Week 7 Fantasy Football: Start Matt Cassel, Sit Tony Romo and More
Everyone and their dog has a fantasy football column now it seems, but your job as a fantasy football owner is to decide what advice to take and what to reject.
Last week, I posted my first fantasy football advice slideshow titled: Start Eli Manning, Sit Tom Brady.
So, how'd I do? Manning posted 15 points in standard, 12-team ESPN leagues while Brady put up 11 points. Good, not great advice, but it puts me at +4 for the week.
My running back advice was not good. I said to start Ronnie Brown (7 points) against an injured Packers defense and to sit Matt Forte (11 points). That brings me down to +0 points for the week.
My wide receiver picks netted +4 points, starting Kenny Britt (9 points) over Randy Moss (5 points), but my tight end advice, start Andrew Quarless (2 points), sit Brent Celek (4 points) netted -2 points.
That means, after one week of fantasy football advice, my predictions have netted a whopping 2 points for fantasy teams across the country! (At least it was a positive total, right?)
I'll try to do even better (if that's possible) this week. Here are my players to start/sit for your Week 7 match-ups.
Quarterbacks: Start Matt Cassel
1 of 8
Last week, Cassel threw for over 200 yards and three touchdowns, good for 20 fantasy points, against the worst pass defense in the league, the Houston Texans.
This week, Cassel will face the 28th ranked Jacksonville Jaguars pass defense. Plus, it's a home game for the Chiefs.
Therefore, I expect more big numbers from a Kansas City passing game that needs to continue throwing the ball better to have a chance at making some noise in the postseason.
Quarterbacks: Sit Tony Romo
2 of 8
Tony Romo threw a couple interceptions last week against the Minnesota Vikings, but still managed to post 20 fantasy points.
Don't expect that kind of production this week, as the New York Giants and their second ranked pass defense come to town.
Romo will be under immense pressure from the Giants' ferocious defensive line, so it'll be best to keep him on your bench.
Running Backs: Start Marshawn Lynch
3 of 8
Marshawn Lynch came in to Seattle and immediately became the team's feature back.
He put up 10 points last week against a tough Chicago Bears defense in his first week with a new team.
Now that he's had an extra week to learn the playbook, I expect him to do better. Plus, he's playing a weaker Arizona Cardinals defense.
Running Backs: Sit Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams
4 of 8
The Dolphins' running game has taken a big step back this year. They haven't been running the ball for as many yards, and they haven't run the Wildcat effectively at all.
This week is not the week they will turn things around. They are heading into a game against the stout Pittsburgh Steelers defense.
With Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams splitting up the carries in Miami's disappointing run game, both should share time on your bench this week.
Wide Receivers: Start Jeremy Maclin
5 of 8
Kevin Kolb connected with Jeremy Maclin two times for touchdowns in last week's game against the Atlanta Falcons, good for a whopping 27 points.
With DeSean Jackson likely out for at least a couple weeks, Maclin will be Kolb's go-to receiver.
Look for him to add at least one more touchdown and close to 100 yards to his season stats this week against the Tennessee Titans.
Wide Receivers: Sit Wes Welker
6 of 8
Wes Welker hasn't been as effective this year as he has been in years past.
He only put up 5 points in his first game without Randy Moss, and Tom Brady seems to love throwing the ball to Deion Branch.
With all these factors working against him, it's best to find other options at your wide receiver position.
Tight Ends: Start Jeremy Shockey
7 of 8
The Saints offense finally started clicking last week in Tampa Bay. I expect that to continue this week at home against Cleveland.
While Shockey didn't have a great game against the Bucs (2 points), Sean Payton and Drew Brees will probably make more of an effort to get him involved in the game plan this week.
Look for Shockey to put up over 50 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Tight Ends: Sit Vernon Davis
8 of 8
Vernon Davis is battling a knee injury and is listed as questionable for this week's game in Carolina. While Davis is expected to play, he may be limited.
Also, the Panthers aren't allowing many passing yards this year. That, of course, is due in large part to teams running the ball effectively in the first half against the Panthers and then running out the clock in the second half after building a lead on the 0-5 team.
Therefore, Davis is a risky play this week and you should go with someone else if you have the option.
