Fantasy Football Sleepers: Why Rams WR Danario Alexander Can Be a Fantasy Stud

Joe SOct 20, 2010

Every year, there are always several wide receivers who go from undrafted in fantasy leagues to fantasy stars. Last year, Miles Austin did it. This year, Brandon Lloyd and Mark Clayton, until Clayton's season-ending injury, became every-week starters.

The first criteria to become a fantasy star: The receiver has to have a good quarterback who can get him the ball. Sam Bradford is already a good NFL quarterback, and he is getting better before our eyes. Many questioned him as the first-overall pick, he has already proved that he is the real deal.

Second, the receiver has to be given an opportunity to become the number one option. When Mark Clayton went down, everyone was scrambling trying to figure out who would get his production. Danny Amendola was the favorite, but Brandon Gibson, Mardy Gilyard and Laurent Robinson were all possibilities.

But no one even mentioned the name Danario Alexander.

Alexander led the NCAA in receiving yards last year, and would have been an early-round pick if it weren't for multiple knee injuries. Instead, he went undrafted and was just signed off the Rams practice squad last week. He got a contract that is unprecedented for a player off the practice squad, receiving four years and a signing bonus. This should have tipped us off that he was ready to play and the Rams believed in him.

His statistics last year for Mizzou are outstanding: 113 catches, 1,781 yards and 14 TDs as a senior. His measurables make him comparable to Calvin Johnson: 6'5'', 215 pounds, 4.46 40-yard-dash and an outstanding vertical leap.

He has excellent playmaking ability and his size should make him a red-zone target. He quickly became Bradford's favorite target, as he caught four passes for 78 yards and a touchdown against the Chargers.

He should be the the first player targeted in the waiver wire this week, although I would recommend waiting one more week before using him, unless your other options are very poor. His potential outweighs his injury risk. Go get him
