Cardinals Vs Chargers: Derek Anderson Benched, Cards Go With Rookie Max Hall

The enigma that is Derek Anderson continues to plague NFL coaches as Arizona Cardinals Head Coach Ken Whisenhunt benched his starting quarterback for rookie Max Hall in the second quarter.

At the time of the benching, Anderson was 7 of 14 for 64 yards. But the key stat that forced his benching most likely was the two interceptions compared to zero touchdowns.

Anderson never has been the model of consistency, but his powerful arm has seduced more than one coach, three now to be exact. Romeo Crennel and Eric Mangini in Cleveland, and now Whisenhunt in Arizona.

Max Hall is an undrafted rookie, so that says a lot about how Whisenhunt feels about Anderson's performance so far this season. Keep in mind Anderson already has been benched once this year.

The Cardinals knew they had to move on from Matt Leinart, but Anderson never has been consistent enough to be the permanent answer at starting quarterback for any team.

Chances are Whisenhunt felt he and the organization were better and smarter than Cleveland's, and that he could "fix" Anderson. This argument is fair enough, but when you watch Anderson play, it's hard to say what you could do with the guy.

Once you get to Anderson's level, certain things about his game, like footwork and decision-making, just aren't going to change anymore.

Anderson can throw the ball across the city, but that doesn't mean he's going to make a smart throw.
