Paperboy Josh Wilson helps delivers big blast in 6-2 win

It seems like months, and indeed it has been since Josh Wilson was swinging a hot bat earning him the nickname of “Paperboy” for delivering clutch hits. But today at Tropicana Field, Josh Wilson delivered probably his biggest hit of the year when he connected for a 3-run homer in the top of the sixth to put the Mariners up 5-2. The home run was only the second of the season for Wilson who has played well in the field since taking over for Jack Wilson, and will be competing for a roster spot again next spring. Josh Wilson always seems to have the same serious look on his face and did not even crack a smile after his round-tripper today.

Another stoic guy Luke French, managed to get the win today going 5 innings before being yanked by Daren Brown after giving-up a couple of singles in the bottom of the sixth. Jamie Wright then came in and pitched out of the jam in one of his better performances of the year against the first-place Rays. Luke French is another guy who like most of the young players called-up this year, has not been too impressive, yet he shows signs of being capable.

The Mariners added another run in the top of the 7th on Matt Mangini’s first RBI, and went on to win 6-2 to avoid the sweep. The Rays meanwhile still have a one game lead on the Yankees who play the Red Sox later on today.

We got another look at Dan Cortes in the eighth inning today and he was impressive. Cortes struck-out the side and was seen afterward in the dugout smiling and talking to Felix Hernandez who must be relieved to know this team has another aggressive pitcher who has the same desire to win as the King. Dan Cortes was moved to the bullpen this year, but I have a feeling he may get a look as a starter next year.

A little bird just landed on my shoulder and let me know there is going to be a little rally next Friday at 530 before the Mariners game put on by the Fire Nintendo group. This grass-roots group, like myself are tired of losing and seek to draw attention to the front office duo of Lincoln/Armstrong and their inept stewardship of this franchise. They will be meeting in front of the big glove outside the left field  gate and all are welcome to participate in this movement. I will post more details later in the week. Till then Go Seahawks!  http://jeffsmariners.com
