Peyton Manning & the NFL’s 10 Eye Popping Stats After Week 2
With the NFL’s second week completed, the season has gotten off to another interesting start.
Teams with high expectations have flopped, and teams with low expectations have overachieved.
Last week, certain teams and players played so well that their stats resemble the kinds of numbers from video games like Madden 11 instead of reality.
Here are 10 statistics from Week 2 that if fans didn’t know about already, they will.
Houston Texans Defense – 442 Yards Allowed
1 of 12
The Houston Texans have gotten off to a 2-0 start and have looked very good this season…on offense. Led by Matt Schaub, the Texans have thrived on their ability to move the ball down the field.
Their defense is another story. Through two weeks they have allowed 442 yards of offense to their opponents.
It is not extremely far fetched considering that they have played the Indianapolis Colts and the Washington Redskins, but that is still way too many points to be allowed for a team that on paper boasts a formidable defense.
Washington Redskins Defense – 453 Yards Allowed
2 of 12
The Redskins are having the same problem that the Texans are having. The only difference is that the Redskins are 1-1 instead of 2-0.
In order for the Redskins to remain competitive in the tough NFC East, they are going to have to shore up their defense.
Just as the Texans did, the Redskins played two of the better offenses in the league their first two weeks in the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Texans.
Mike Shanahan is determined to restore the Redskins to prominence, so the defense should be one of his top priorities.
Chicago Bears Defense – 28 Rushing Yards Allowed Per Game…38 Allowed Vs. Dallas
3 of 12
The Monsters of the Midway have gotten off to an impressive 2-0 start.
While most of the credit is going to Mike Martz’s ability to jumpstart the Bears offense, the defense should be receiving a lot of credit as well.
The Bears defense has allowed a minuscule 28 yards per game through the first two weeks.
Even more impressive is that they limited the Dallas Cowboys to only 38 yards on the ground.
Dallas has a three-headed monster at running back: Marion Barber, Felix Jones, and Tashard Choice. Holding them to only 38 rushing yards is no small feat.
Tennessee Titans 7 Turnovers Against the Steelers
4 of 12
The Tennessee Titans offense did not have too much trouble moving the ball against the Pittsburgh Steelers; they did have trouble maintaining possession of it.
Last Sunday against the Steelers, the Titans managed to turn the ball over seven times: three interceptions and four lost fumbles.
To make this statistic even worse, the Titans fumbled the ball a total of seven times, but were fortunate enough to recover three of them.
Buffalo Bills Offense – 8.5 Points…176 Yards Total Offense…89 Passing Yards
5 of 12
Those are averages of points scored per game, yards of total offense gained per game, and passing yards per game that the Buffalo Bills offense has averaged through the first two weeks of the season.
Those stats are nothing short of terrible. Experts were expecting the Bills to be bad this season, but not this bad. These offensive numbers are abysmal.
The Bills are currently 0-2. The Buffalo Bills could potentially go winless if they do not start making things happen on offense.
Mike Nugent – 5/5 Field Goals in 15-10 Victory
6 of 12
Mike Nugent was the Cincinnati Bengals offense against the Baltimore Ravens last Sunday.
For a team that boasts Carson Palmer at quarterback with Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens to throw to, that makes these five field goals by Nugent that much more eye-popping. It is good to see a kicker get some recognition every once in awhile.
The Bengals offense most likely will not remain dormant the whole season, but they have to be happy that their kicker can come through when they need him.
Donovan McNabb – 426 Passing Yards…1 TD…119 QB Rating
7 of 12
Despite losing to the Houston Texans in Week 2, Donovan McNabb’s performance should not be forgotten.
He threw for 426 yards and one touchdown. He also did not throw an interception.
The chances of losing a game when your quarterback puts up those kinds of numbers is rare, but when the opposing quarterback puts up even better numbers, unique things happen.
Matt Schaub – 497 Yards…3 TDs…114 QB Rating
8 of 12
Matt Schaub put the Texans' offense on his back last Sunday, leading the Texans to victory. He threw for 497 yards, three touchdowns, and had a QB rating of 114.
Just the thought of any quarterback putting up those numbers makes fantasy owners tremble, let alone when they actually do it.
Matt Schaub owners everywhere are definitely more than satisfied with his play through the first two weeks.
Michael Vick – 284 Passing Yards…2 TDs…0 INTs…108 QB Rating
9 of 12
The rust that Michael Vick showed last season after returning from his suspension has seemed to wear off.
Not only does he seem to have gotten his legs back underneath him, but he also is throwing the ball extremely well this season.
Given the way that the Philadelphia Eagles have made known that Kevin Kolb is the starter makes these numbers stand out even more.
Vick has now put up these numbers for two consecutive weeks, making Eagles fans forget about Donovan McNabb.
If Kolb doesn’t recover well from his concussion, it will be interesting to see if Vick can continue to repeat performances such as the one he had Sunday.
Jay Cutler – 277 Yards…3 TDs…108 QB Rating…0 INTs
10 of 12
Just as it did in 2009, as Jay Cutler goes so does the Chicago Bears offense. He played extremely well in the Bears victory over the Dallas Cowboys.
He had an impressive QB rating of 108 to go along with his three touchdown passes and 277 passing yards.
The most impressive stat was Cutler’s 0 in the interception category. He tends to throw risky passes, sometimes even seems to force them, but Sunday against the Cowboys Cutler was impressive.
The rollercoaster love/hate treatment that Bears fans give Cutler has only been of love so far this season.
James Harrison – 11 Tackles…2 Sacks…2 Forced Fumbles
11 of 12
James Harrison was a beast last Sunday, wreaking havoc on defense for the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Tennessee Titans.
Amongst a list of team defensive statistics and individual offensive players’ statistics, James Harrison makes his presence felt.
The former NFL Defensive MVP Award winner is looking to become a repeat winner, with Sunday’s performance stealing the all the thunder away from the rest of the league’s defensive players.
Peyton Manning – 145.5 QB Rating…255 Passing Yards…3 TDs
12 of 12
Peyton Manning was back to his usual ways on Sunday, carving up another NFL defense with ease. The four-time MVP was as good as ever leading the Indianapolis Colts over the New York Giants.
Although Peyton did not throw for a large sum of yards, he was extremely accurate completing 20 of his 26 pass attempts.
Manning’s performance evened the Colts record at 1-1. To make these numbers look even more impressive is that he had them against his brother, Eli Manning.
Sibling rivalry is not very common in professional sports, so when it happens it’s pretty unique.
