San Francisco Head Coach Mike Singletary Says 49ers Will Shutdown Drew Brees

Randy SavoieSep 18, 2010

San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary is sounding like Broadway Joe Namath this week with all these bold guarantees he is making about what his winless team will do to the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football.

Too bad ole' Samurai Mike doesn't always practice what he preaches—that stuff about being disciplined and smart.

Singletary did not sound particularly disciplined or very smart on Friday when he boldly guaranteed that, "We (the 49ers) will not try to stop Drew Brees, we will stop Drew Brees. Next question."

The next question from KPIX-TV in San Francisco was "How about trying to move the ball against the New Orleans defense?"

To which Singletary responded, "We will not try to move the ball against the New Orleans defense, we will move the ball and we will score."

Some mighty bold talk from a man whose team got taken to the woodshed last Sunday by the lowly Seattle Seahawks.

Singletary's angry remarks were apparently prompted by a Yahoo Sports' report by Jason Cole detailing the problems the 49ers had in getting plays called in a timely manner during last Sunday's 31-6 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. An anonymous source blamed offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye for the breakdown in plays being relayed to quarterback Alex Smith in time.

Singletary is livid about the internal leak.

"If there is something that you have to say, go say it and say that you said it," said Singletary. "But don't go say a bunch of stuff, 'but don't tell him I said it.' To me, that's a rat. That's a coward and a rat. If the rat is in the building, it will show in time but I'm not going to go try and find him.

After lightly regarded Seattle beat the 49ers by 25 points on Sunday, there were widespread reports that the San Francisco offense was not getting play calls fast enough from the sidelines. The 49er offense was forced to waste three timeouts and received a delay-of-game penalty in the opening day loss.

The Yahoo Sports article stated that San Francisco offensive coordinator frequently miscommunicates the play leading to breakdowns in getting the correct play called on the field. According to Yahoo Sports, several 49ers have complained about Raye to Singletary about this problem which dates back to last year.

These reports led to a tense exchange between Singletary and San Francisco TV sports anchor Dennis O'Donnell regarding the competence of Jimmy Raye

"The point I'm trying to make is that I don't even want to talk about the Yahoo (article)," said Singletary. "It really pisses me off now that I sit here and think about it...Whoever said it, I don't care who said it, it's over, it's done, I want to move forward."

O'Donnell pressed Singletary about the 49ers difficulties in getting plays called quickly enough, and Singletary became angrier saying, "I want to talk about New Orleans if you want to talk about that."

That is when Singletary declared that San Francisco will not try to stop Brees, they will stop Brees and that the 49ers would not try to move the ball against the Saints defense, they will move the ball against the Saints defense.

With the kind of foul mood Singletary is in, don't be surprised if he drops his pants again at halftime like he did in 2008.

All is not well on the Bay these days.
