Brett Favre Is Back | 2010 NFL Fantasy Football Player Rankings

Sean E. DouglasAug 18, 2010

It took Brett Favre until the middle of August to make his decision to play for the Vikings for the second year in a row. While the media tried to suggest that Favre would retire earlier this month, I think most NFL fans realized it was just news for the press to have something to talk about.

Now, Favreย will make another run at winning a championship, and the Vikingsย have a chance at theย win that they wouldn't haveย had without him.

Since I never thought that Favre was actually going to retire this season, Iโ€™ve had Sidney Rice as a clear top-15 fantasy receiver this summer. Rice and Percy Harvin need to stay healthy but they both proved to be solid fantasy options with Favre.

As long as Riceย keeps progressing and is on track to play the opening game of the season, he should be a nice No.ย two fantasy receiver for your team. As for Harvin, he would make for more of a No.ย three, or flex play option, because of his migraine problems.

Harvin missed timeย due to recurring migrainesย last season and has struggled with this issue for most of his life. Because of his track record, fantasy ownersย should be a littleย weary when drafting Harvin and make sure they have a capable backup to fill his place.

Tight end Visanthe Shiancoe should still be a starting player for fantasy squads, especially in leagues that heavily reward touchdowns. Shiancoe is Favreโ€™s favorite target in the red zone, and that shouldnโ€™t change this season.

As for Favreโ€™s own fantasy value, he is still a starting quarterback for 10 to 12 team leagues. Because of Favreโ€™s age, it would be wise for you to select a decent backup quarterback like Carson Palmer, Joe Flacco or even Kevin Kolb.

If Favre sustains an injury at any time this season, it could easily linger and effect his fantasy stats. That would be the time for youย to switch gears and go with your backup, until Favre proves he is healthy again.
