Brett Favre: Five QB's To Take Over as Vikings Starting QB

Nick RagnerAug 9, 2010

We all knew it would happen sooner or later...right?

Farve is having a hard time deciding whether he should come back and compete for a title with the Vikes this season which leads me to believe this will no doubt be his last year if he plays.

The question I have is who will take over for Favre after he leaves the horns behind.

Sage Rosenfels?  Tavaris Jackson?  Hogwash.

That's taking the easy way out.

I'm about to give all of you B/R readers 5 potential starters for the Vikings at quarterback when next season rolls around who will do more for this team than fill the depth chart (see Tavaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels)

Enjoy:

David Garrard

1 of 5

To start things off, let's keep it totally realistic.

Everyone, even Garrard, knows his time in Jacksonville is counting down as we speak.

With the Jags in a transitional period, it really isn't all that important to them that they keep Garrard under contract.

Garrard is a perfect fit for Minnesota.  He may not have the press attention of a Brett Favre, but he's got the IQ and the accuracy to make this team a Superbowl contender.  With AP in the backfield, a stellar O-Line, and a great supporting cast of Wide-Outs, Garrard just can't turn the ball over (see TD:INT ratio since becoming a starter in 2006) and they will be a success.

Minnesota will pounce on this opportunity as a last resort if they can't find a bigger headliner.

Ben Rothlisberger

2 of 5

Quite an obvious pick I believe most would think.

Ben has been in the middle of quite alot of controversy in Pittsburgh which may run him out of the Steelers organization altogether.

A perfect scenario for the Vikings would be that the quarterback succeeding Big Ben while he's on suspension (i.e. Charlie Batch, Dennis Dixon, Byron Leftwich), would lead the team to a hot start and presumably own the right as Steelers starting quarterback, thus leaving the two time starting Superbowl champ on the bench.

If the rest of the season goes the way Minnesota fans would hope, one of the three previous bench warmers would lead the Steelers to a playoff record, and also steal Ben's job long term.

During the offseason, especially if the young Dennis Dixon happens to take over as the Steelers franchise quarterback, Pittsburgh will shop Ben and his contract around to teams that will be looking to make a  big trade.

The Vikes will snatch Ben for a draft pick and name him starting quarterback just a few hours later.

Jay Cutler

3 of 5

Yes, Minnesota steals yet another franchise quarterback from a division foe.

And yes, it is also another guy with a cannon for a arm, but questionable decision making.

Jay will go yet another mediocre season in Chicago where the Bears will finish 3rd, whether the Vikes have Farve or not.

I will also predict his numbers won't improve as he will still have a 1 TD to INT ratio.

After the season is over, Chicago will get sick of this second coming of Rex Grossman and toss him.

Minnesota will be there to catch him as he falls.

The Vikings like this pick up because he is still young and can still develop.  He also has a Farve-ess to him, with a huge arm that could throw miles, he could spread the offense and find guys like Bernard Berrian and Percy Harvin open down the field.  He could also take pressure off of AP with his ability to stretch the defense with his uncanniness to launch a ball over any defense.

Although his turnovers are a problem, that's nothing a better running game, defense, and supporting cast could help him improve on when he trades his black and orange for the purple and yellow.

Michael Vick

4 of 5

This is actually a pretty realistic scenario.  With the Vikings looking to replace a legend with another possible high profile quarterback, Vick would be a perfect fit.

Vick has stated that he wants to start somewhere and the Minnesota Vikings would be a great opportunity for him.  Look at this:

1) Vick would add his speed and scrambling ability to an already top notch running game which would take pressure off of him having to make plays with his arm.

2) The Vikings have a good defense that can handle the game to which Vick wouldn't need to worry about putting up 30 points a game so he can be free to sling the ball around the field and take chances.

3) The duo of Harvin and Rice that could make Vick's life alot easier.  With Rice's ability to make impossible catches and Harvin's ability to catch dump offs and make plays allows Vick to less rely on his arm accuracy rather than just getting the ball in a general area.

Overall, Vick as a Viking makes a lot of sense is a lot of ways.

Tom Brady

5 of 5

You heard it hear first folks, come this time next season, we may see Tom Brady in a red practice jersey with a purple helmet on.

Could you imagine it?

Possibly the number one quarterback, number one running back, and number one defense all on one team?  Talk about 19-0.

Sure, this is by far a stretch of the imagination, but it also isn't something to wag a finger at.  Brady is having problems discussing his contract with the Patriots and with the"Hood's" rep of working with unproven quarterbacks, and with the Patriots being in a transition state, the possibility of the Pats letting Brady walk is not out of reach.

If by some crazy chance New England lets arguably their greatest player ever go, look for the Vikes to jump on the chance to offer him that fat contract as well as a fourth Superbowl ring.
