Mark Sanchez: Not As Good As We Think He Is
This is the beginning of preseason...Times are really exciting, especially if you're a Jets fan. This is the Year that the Jets go all the Way, the year that they pull it all together and win the AFC east for the 4th time in 44 years, and win the Super Bowl.
That's all great, except there are fans who Say Mark Sanchez is the one who led them there. How could anyone be so delusional? Mark Sanchez is an average QB, who just did what he had to to win a few games(not throw interceptions, not turn over the ball, etc.)
Other QB's do that too I don't hear them being heralded. Does anyone even remember the name of the QB who won the Super Bowl with the Buccaneers? Don't worry, I'll wait.
I'm not saying Mark Sanchez can't be great, but he is definitely not good now. He needs to develop his skills a bit further before he can be mentioned among the leagues elite.
I did a bit of research on Sanchez and The Stats i've come up with are quite interesting.
Sanchez only won 2 games throwing more than 30 passes, against the Texans where he went 18-for-31, and against the Titans when he went 17-for-30. i would also like to point out the Titans were having a identity crisis at QB...I digress. Regardles, the Texans ranked 18th and the Titans ranked 31st against the pass respectively. That's not anything to write home about.
With the exception of those 2 games, any game where Sanchez threw more than 24 times, they lost. He went 18-for-32 in the game against Atlanta, and they lost 10-7. He went 10-for-29 in the game against Buffalo, throwing 5 interceptions and they lost in overtime 16-13...Sanchez had a QB rating of 8.3. And last, He went 8-for-21 in the game against New England. "Sanchize" threw 1 TD to 4 INTs and lost 31-14.
2 of 3 are Sanchez's worst games. but to be fair, lets compare his worst games, to 2 elite QB's worst games. I'm Talking of course about Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.
Peyton Manning's worst game was against The New York Jets(Ironic huh?), Where Manning was 14-for-31 with 137 yards and 2 interceptions. The Jets won 41-0, Manning shutout in a playoff game... I wouldn't even have guessed it. Another bad game was against the New England Patriots where some people would say that Ty Law was his favorite WR. they lost 24-14 and Manning threw 23-for-37 with a TD, 4 INTs, and an abysmal 35.5 QB Rating.
Tom Brady has had a few bad games himself. Playing the Dolphins in his 3rd start, Brady went 12-24 for 86 yards with no TDs or INTs. Also he had a pretty bad game for the Colts as well. Throwing 4 INTs with no TDs in a 20-27 loss.
Sanchez also doesn't have what I would call a career game yet, but he was Pretty good in the playoffs. His best game was against the Bengals, where he went 12-for-15 for 182 yards and a TD. That's a key number, 15 pass attempts. In the Jets victory against the San Diego Chargers, Sanchez was 12-for-23 with 100 yards, a TD, and an INT. Last, in the loss against the Colts, He went 17-for-30 for 257 yards, 2 TDs and an INT. 30, That's more than 23 isn't it? What happened that game, the lost.
What those stat's tell me is that In games where you have to rely on Sanchez's arm to win, you lose, except when you go against teams that don't have a very competitive pass defense. That doesn't make you elite, it takes time to be considered among those few players.
But if you count on Mark Sanchez, the QB Who threw up worse stats than Matt Stafford(who might I add is on one of the worst teams in the NFL), to take you to the Super Bowl, you might as well have Rex Ryan sign Joe Namath on the team again and have him be his personal coach. They have a lot in common, both have thrown more Int's in their Careers(up to now) than TDs.
The Jets might make the Super Bowl, but if they do, it wont be because they rode Sanchez's arm. They might have to count on their running game, and with a 2nd year in Shonn Greene who shows promise and a LaDainian Tomlinson who is on the decline, its not looking too good.
