Brett Favre To Retire, So Where Does This Leave His Legacy?

Brian ShannonAug 3, 2010

In the long and twisting saga of "will he play or won't he," this could be the biggest turn yet as ESPN.com is reporting that Brett Favre contacted his Minnesota Vikings teammates to tell them that "this is it."

This certainly is a surprise as nearly everyone in the media thought Favre would be back for another season in Minnesota.

Most believed Favre would return after the NFC Championship loss to the Saints where he threw an interception late in the game that ultimately swung the decision in favor of New Orleans.

No one thought that Favre would, or better yet, could go out like that but now he reportedly has.

Favre will retire from the NFL as one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game.

He is the career leader in passes completed with 6,083, besting Dan Marino's second by over 1,000 completions.

Favre also holds the records for most yards in a career with 69,329, the most seasons of 3,000 passing yards or more with 18, and the most touchdown passes in a career with 497.

Favre will be known for his mentality as a gunslinger on the field just as much as he will be remembered for his records. This was evident by the fact that Favre also holds the NFL record for interceptions thrown in a career with 317.

Favre will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the five best quarterbacks of all time and certainly the greatest quarterback in Green Bay Packers history.

Favre's Sunday magic will be missed by many, and his decision leaves Vikings fans in a state of confusion as the season is now just over a month away.
