Tony Romo Is the Right Man In Dallas
Tony Romo is overrated. ย Heโs a farce. ย He chokes in big games. ย He doesnโt care about football. ย Heโs more interested in becoming a star than a championship quarterback.
Itโs difficult to convince anyone of anything when these are their thoughts about your teamโs quarterback, and I hear them each and every day.
Never mind that heโs made three Pro Bowls. ย Never mind that heโs No. 3 on the NFLโsย all-time ย passer rating list, and No. 4ย all-time ย in yards-per-pass. ย Never mind that he just led your โBoys to their first playoff win in over a decade.

Now, Romo himself has saidย heโs not yet an elite quarterback ย (although I beg to differ), but that doesnโt mean he wonโtย becomeย an elite quarterback. ย The great Peyton Manning didnโt win a playoff game until his sixth (!) NFL season.
ย I didnโt hear the Indy media calling for his head back in 2003. ย When youโre the quarterback of Americaโs Team though, expectations are a bit different.
Romo has already won a playoff game, but thereโs no doubting the fact that now, in 2010 (technically 2011), he needs to advance (far) in the playoffs.
And what if he doesnโt? ย Iโm not thinking about that right now. ย I have full confidence in the star-donning quarterback becauseย Iโm on Team Romo. ย Amber Leigh is on Team Romo . ย Are you?
The Evidence
Iโll admit it is easy to select a teamโs quarterback as their most vital playerโvery few teams could still make a playoff run with their backup signal-caller at the helm.
But Romo surpasses the worth of an average quarterback by leaps and bounds. ย There is a reason I provided him with theย highest grade of any Dallas Cowboy ย in 2009.
Now, I could try to impress you with Romoโs 4,483 yards or 26:9 touchdown-to-interception ratio, but the truth is Romo just needs to do what it takes to win in 2010.
And heโs done that in the past, posting an incredible 107-55 record to date. ย Of course, as fans, we wantย playoff ย wins. ย Weย expect ย Romo to get to the playoffs. ย But letโs not forget that these expectations only result from our overwhelming confidence in him.
Did weย expectย the same for Quincy Carter or Chad Hutchinson? ย How about Ryan Leaf? ย Clint Stoerner? Drew Henson? ย How about the incomparable Brad Johnson, whose three-game stint in 2008 showed us how important Tony Romo is to the Dallas Cowboys.
With Romo, the Cowboys are one of the NFLโs best teams, possessing one of the most dangerous offenses in the league. ย Without him, they are mediocre. ย They are boring. ย They are the Washington Redskins. . .crap.
And, unfortunately, thatโs the only way many fans appreciate Romoโs importanceโby his absence.
Michael Irvin summed it up best:
"Can we get Drew Bledsoe back out here (for) just a week so you guys can really fall back in love with Tony? ย Letโs put Drew Bledsoe back out here, because sometimes when you have a pretty girl for awhile, you forget how pretty she is. But when you throw the ugly girl next to her, you say, โNo, Iโm really doing well.โ Maybe we need to bring Drew out so we know weโre really doing well.
"
Subtract any other offensive player from the Cowboys and the team will keep on rolling. ย Lose Doug Free or Marc Colombo to injury? ย Alex Barron can step in. ย How about a receiver? ย Well, that happened yesterday with theย Dez Bryant injury , but the Cowboys will be fine. ย
Andre Gurode and Jason Witten are incredibly important players without completely reliable backups, but their losses still wouldnโt be debilitating.
Losing Romo would be crippling to the Cowboys. ย Could they make the playoffs? ย Perhaps. Could they win a championship? ย Not a chance.
This time letโs not wait for a Romo injury before we realize his importance. ย Itโs easy to call for the backup when things arenโt going as planned, but true, loyal fans stick by their guy during times of adversity. ย
On which side of the fence will you be this season if the โBoys stumble out of the gate to a 4-4 start? ย Will you be screaming for Kitna? ย Or will you support your quarterback, knowing he is the most vital piece to the Super Bowl puzzle?
So I guess Iโll ask you again. . .are you on Team Romo?
