Philadelphia Eagles Still Making Offseason Moves: Acquire Another RB

Dan PennwynJul 30, 2010

The Philadelphia Eagles have announced late Friday evening they have acquired veteran running back J.J. Arrington, or a 2012 conditional draft pick if he is waived from the team, from the Denver Broncos.

Arrington (5'9", 212 lbs) was a 2005 second round pick of the Arizona Cardinals.

In his first four seasons, J.J. amassed 654 rushing yards and went on to score three touchdowns. He has also shown that he has soft hands coming out of the backfield as he recorded 91 receptions for an additional 693 yards and two touchdowns in his career.

Possibly more note worthy, Arrington has a wealth of experience returning kickoffs, averaging 23.6 yards per carry and returning two for touchdowns—head coach Andy Reid claims that WR DeSean Jackson will continue returning punts for the Philadelphia Eagles.

Arrington spent the 2009 season recoving from microfracture surgery in his knee and if he can show the front office he has recouped and recovered from said injury, he could just find a home on special teams.

For Arrington's services, the Eagles have sent linebacker Joe Mays, who was a 2008 sixth round draft pick, and became expendable after the Eagles loaded up with other linebackers during the offseason.

It started with the Eagles drafting Keenen Clayton, Jamar Chaney, and followed it up by trading for Ernie Sims.

Mays found a home on special teams with the Birds in 2009 after he struggled in pass defense as he attempted to fill Stewart Bradley's void.

Arrington is coming to camp looking at a long line of running backs in front of him including starter LeSean McCoy, Mike Bell, rookie Charles Scott, and Eldra Buckley just to name a few.

The Eagles also have 2009 pro bowl FB Leonard Weaver who can also chip in as a running back as he did last season.

He is merely just another training camp body with a potential to be a phenomenal special teams player for the Birds.

For the fans, we'll get to see just what the Eagles got out of the deal as the pads go on tomorrow!
