The Manny Ramirez Saga Continues: What Should the Red Sox Do?

Corey McSweeneyJul 28, 2008

Well, we now have about zero reasons to love Manny Ramirez. The union between the team and player seems to have deteriorated and it might end sooner than later. So what should happen? I got something.

The only way the team can really fathom getting rid of Manny before the trade deadline is for the team to come out with a still solid lineup so they can compete for a championship, as they well should.

Here's what they do. Trade Manny to a team and get a couple of top-tier prospects.

The Marlins seem like a team he could fit into and they have a decent farm system. The Red Sox must pick up the rest of Manny's contract this year because it will maximize their potential for players they get back and no team will take him if they have to pay his gigantic salary.

After the Red Sox do this, they go and trade for Mark Teixeira. They should have some extra prospects they could use to sweeten the deal. If the Sox have to put Youkilis in the deal, they can put Ellsbury in left for the rest of the season and put Crisp in center.

The best-case scenario is if the Braves decide they're mailing in the rest of the season and want to replenish their farm system in the mold of their '90s teams.

If Boston can keep Youkilis, they can put him in left field and have a lineup that is at least as strong as it was with Manny in it. And if they can sign Teixeira, while there would be no reason to let him go, they will have set themselves up to compete through the next five years with a bunch of young, talented hitters and a couple great veterans.

To sum things up, here's my proposal for a three-team deal that I think could work, albeit in a (slightly) crazy world.

Florida gets: Manny Ramirez

Boston gets: Mark Teixeira

Atlanta gets: Jed Lowrie, Michael Bowden, Chris Volstad, player to be named from Florida (could be Maybin or Miller if Florida would part with them or a lesser prospect or two like P Sean West or C Gaby Sanchez)

Doesn't sound too crazy, right? A man can dream.
