Minnesota Twins First Baseman Justin Morneau Wins Justin Bieber Tickets

There is no doubt that Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau is one of the premier players in the league. The 2006 AL MVP is hitting .350 with 15 homeruns and 50 RBI this season, and has led his Twins to the top of the AL Central standings.

It is clear that he is a fan favorite in Minnesota, but when is favoritism confused with ignorance?

Twin Cities radio station 101.3 FM-KDWB held a contest on Tuesday in which fans could win front row tickets to see teen heartthrob Justin Bieber, who was performing at Target Center that night.

The catch? You had to have someone famous call in for you.

Several local celebrities, including Wally the Beerman, former Vikings center Matt Birk, top-ranked LPGA golfer Cristie Kerr, Hall of Famer Paul Molitor, Vikings All-Pro Jared Allen, and former governor Arne Carlson all called in.

“My niece texted me, ‘Can you call in to KDWB?’” Morneau said. “So I called in. I was listening to it to make sure I wasn’t getting punk’d.”

Morneau won the tickets, but it was who he beat that surprised him the most.

“Apparently Reggie Jackson called in after I did,” Morneau said. “Somehow, I won.”

That’s right. Mr. October himself. 563 career home runs, 14 All-Star Games, five World Series titles, and 1993 Hall of Fame inductee Reggie Jackson. 

After winning the tickets, Morneau sent Bieber an autographed jersey, which prompted Bieber to tweet “Shoutout to Justin Morneau… we r both Canadian, both named Justin, both in MN, and both like McDonalds (Morneau has become a recent spokesperson for the fastfood chain). He is in my Wolfpack.”
