Fantasy Baseball Monday Morning Line-Up Decisions: Miguel Cabrera

Eric StashinMay 24, 2010

Those in weekly formats have a big decision to make for the upcoming week with the announcement by Jason Beck via Twitter that Miguel Cabrera will miss the upcoming two-game series against the Mariners for the birth of his child. We all know Cabrera is one of the elite hitters in the game, but do you leave him active in a week where he will play just three games?

It’s tough to imagine taking Cabrera out of your lineup no matter what the circumstances. But knowing that he’s going to take the field for at least a few games?  He has the potential to outperform any replacement, even with just a dozen or so at-bats. Is it that hard to imagine him hitting a pair of home runs against the A’s over the weekend?

To me, Cabrera is the type of player you roll the dice with, through thick and thin. If you are in a shallower format and are lucky enough to have another elite option available to you, that is one thing. Deeper formats, it’s a different story.

In my 13-team league (33-man rosters), the best corner infielders available on the waiver wire are:

  • Lyle Overbay
  • Omar Infante
  • Jeff Keppinger
  • Adam Rosales
  • Andy LaRoche

Making you itch to pick up a replacement, isn’t it? Even if you are in a 12-team league, if you have a 1B, 3B, CI, and Util, the chances are you don’t have a viable replacement on your bench. The fact is, I’d rather have three games from Cabrera then five or six from whoever I have on my bench.

It’s a blow to say the least, but I’d still run Cabrera out there for the upcoming week.  You know you are going to get something from him, which will likely be more valuable than what you could get from whoever else you can throw in there.

What are your thoughts? What would you do if you were a Cabrera owner? If you do own Cabrera, what options do you have and what are you going to do?
