Every week, athletes go out and give it their all just to help their teams get the win. At this time, some are in the midst of a playoff run and some are reaching the 50 mark in a 162 game season.

While trying to honor these athletes, I've decided to start an athlete of the week article. Each week I'll pick five candidates for the award and decide on one winner.

With that being said, here are the first five ever candidates for my athlete of the week award.

Rajon Rondo

In the heat of the NBA playoffs, Rajon Rondo averaged 22 points, 7.6 rebounds and 10.6 assists as his Celtics team knocked off LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavilers.

Rondo lead the Celtics past the Cavs and came out as a star NBA player for the future of the NBA and the Celtics.

Mat Latos

On Thursday, San Diego Padres' pitcher Mat Latos tossed a one hitter against the San Fransisco Giants.

What I find most impressive about Latos' one hitter is that he managed not to walk a single batter which means if he kept Eli Whiteside off base then he would have had a perfect game, the second one this week.

Brennan Boesch

Some people may not have heard of Brennan Boesch, but get ready to hear his name.

He is a good 25-year old outfielder who put together a solid week with 8 hits, 1 HR and 5 RBI's while helping the Tigers take three out of four from the Yankees.

Simon Gagne

This week, Simon Gagne helped the Philadelphia Flyers come back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Boston Bruins and advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Gagne scored 3 goals and 1 assist as the Flyers had 4-0, 2-1, and 4-3 wins.

Dallas Braden

Even though Braden was hit for four runs in a loss last night to the Angels, he deserves to be honored here this week for what he did on Sunday, tossing the 19th perfect in MLB history

Even better than Braden's pefect game was his grandmother simply saying "Stick it A-Rod" in reference to Bradens rivalry with Yankees star Alex Rodriguez

So now that we've looked at all five candidates, it's time to determine a winner for my first ever athlete of the week award.

And the award for the week of May 9th to May 15th is Dallas Braden.

Even though Braden lost last night, I felt that him tossing a perfect game was enough for him to get the nod slightly over Rajon Rondo.

With all that goes on in the week of sports, it's very possible that I missed somebody. If you think I missed someone or even have suggestions for next weeks player when the time comes, please feel free to e-mail me at g_men_stephen@yahoo.com

Thanks and Congratulations to Dallas Braden for winning the Player of the Week.
