2009 NFL Season in Review: Week 15

The Eagles played host to the San Francisco 49ers in Week Fifteen with large mounds of snow in the parking lot and freezing temperatures in the stadium. Despite the poor weather, the Birds knew that they could clinch a playoff birth with a victory.

Keeping that in mind, the Eagles came out with an impressive opening drive on offense that resulted in DeSean Jackson finding the end zone on a 19 yard reception from Donovan McNabb. The Eagles took the early lead but the Niners didn’t wait too long to respond. Joe Nedney knocked down a 51 yard field goal to make the score 7-3. The rest of the quarter would move along slowly, but things picked up in the second quarter.

In the second quarter, the Eagles pieced together a nice drive and capped it with a touchdown on an eight yard McNabb rushing touchdown. The Eagles offense continued to find success moving the football in the second quarter but failed to convert it into any touchdowns. David Akers tacked on two field goals in the second quarter and the Eagles took a 20-3 lead to halftime.

The third quarter was all Niners as they put up 10 consecutive points, and kept the Eagles off the board. Frank Gore started to do some damage on his way to a 100+ yard rushing day. As the game moved into the fourth quarter, the Niners were within one score, 20-13.

With the weather the way it was, the Eagles tried to establish a run game to eat clock. The main ingredient in this plan was Leonard Weaver, who carried the ball 17 times on the day for 52 yards. LeSean McCoy added 48 yards on nine carries, and added a touchdown in the fourth quarter that helped seal the victory.

At the end of the day, the Eagles walked away with a 27-13 win and punched their playoff ticket. With that in their pocket, it was time to get ready for next week and the emotional return of Brian Dawkins.
