Tennessee Titans Draft Pick Breakdown: Myron Rolle
The Titans have had some pretty good draft since Mike Reinfeldt. This year could be his best yet. Some really big names were taken along with some potential risks. For this series I'm going to break down each pick individually and let you know how successful I think they will become.
The Titans' second sixth-round pick is probably one of the most known stories coming out of college. Myron Rolle was a star at Florida State starting game four of his freshman year. He continued to put up big numbers in his sophomore and junior years and looked to be a possible first-round pick if he came out early.
However, Rolle decided to take a route not many football players have taken. He stepped away from the game of football in his senior season to become a Rhodes Scholar at the University of Oxford. Many people believe that the reason why he was so good on the football field was his intelligence. He always ended up near the ball and made some big plays for FSU.
While Oxford is very impressive, it really hurt his draft stock taking him from a first rounder to a late sixth rounder. Many scouts questioned his "love for the game" and figured there was a risk he could be a two or three year player and then decide to do something with that prestigious academic record.
I would like to disagree with every one of those scouts right now. For someone who gave up football to finish his academic career at Oxford, coming back to football shows me how much he loves the game. With his degree, Rolle could make money outside of football in a heartbeat.
In my opinion, Rolle is one of the first athletes to get it right. Most careers in the NFL are done before the age of 30. Yes, in that time even the least paid players will make at least five million dollars over that time. But after they retire, then what? What do they do with their lives?
As for Rolle's plan, he wants to be either a doctor or a congressman and make a difference in people's lives.
I apologize for this breakdown not being as much about football, but in the end I think it is his smarts that will make him a great player. As a proud Titan fan, I'm glad to say Myron Rolle is on my team.
