2010 NFL Draft: Tim Tebow Will Put Josh McDaniels' Genius To The Test

Old AccountApr 26, 2010

Under head coach Josh McDaniels, the Denver Broncos have been heading in a different direction than most fans hoped.

A part of that direction has been to trade their franchise quarterback and receiver away, after McDaniels clearly wasn't impressed with either of them.

And this year in the draft, after trading multiple times in the first round, Denver made their selection.

The Baltimore Ravens have traded the 25th overall pick to the Denver Broncos. And with the 25th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Denver Broncos select, Tim Tebow, quarterback, Florida.

This was the selection we were waiting for on day one. And apparently the Denver Broncos bought into him.

If you're a Tebow fan, your excited either way. His performance on the college level can never be questioned.

But as an NFL player?? It remains to be seen.

What we do know is Tebow is a development at this point in his career.

Trading three picks in what is a deep draft for a project will be the turning point in whether or not McDaniels has a job three years from now.

This pick is unique. The Tebow selection isn't just a normal stretch in the first round, which now puts McDaniel's ability to the test.

Everything that he is known for, and what he learned from Bill Belichick, will be judged because of Tim Tebow.

McDaniels worked with Tom Brady, and is known for being a main contributor to the Patriots' record setting offense a few seasons ago.

The following season, McDaniels was forced to turn to backup Matt Cassel, who never started a game since high school.

Still, an 11-5 season appeared, and McDaniels bolted to Denver to replace Mike Shanahan.

The Broncos organization is under pressure to find success in 2010, especially with the trades of Cutler and Marshall the past two seasons.

If I was near the Broncos organization at all, I would think right away it will be a battle between Brady Quinn and Kyle Orton, while Tim Tebow takes a seat on the bench this year.

In fact, it must happen, unless Tebow runs a few plays in the wildcat.

Tebow has improved his throwing motion, but still has a major flaw of throwing successfully on the run.

Combined with adjusting to going under center, Tebow can't be the starter for the next two years.

But we know his will and determination to learn the game, which I'm sure made McDaniels pull the trigger.

McDaniels is trying to become the coach that breaks off the Belichick tree as a success, instead of the failures from his multiple coordinators who have tried to coach elsewhere.

McDaniels is aware of what Tebow needs to improve on, and it will take some time.

For his sake, his job will be on the line, along with his inner genius.

McDaniels was supposed to turn Cutler into one of the leagues best passers. Instead, he dealt him to Chicago.

Is Tebow the next quarterback of the Broncos that will win championships like John Elway?

That is the pressure McDaniels will have to deal with, and if it doesn't pan out, don't be surprised to see him looking for a coordinator job in a few seasons.
