2010 NFL Draft Day Two Recap: Winners, Losers and More

Chris MaierApr 23, 2010

The story of day two was the slide of quarterbacks Jimmy Clausen and Colt McCoy but a day of speculation led to a flurry of day two trades (11 trades total).  Here is an update on the winners and losers through the first two days of selections:  (limited to 5 teams in each section)

Winners

Tampa Bay Buccaneers : Re-shaped the interior defensive line with two of the top defensive tackles on the board (two of NFLDraft101.com's top three DTs) in Gerald McCoy and Brian Price then followed it up by filling their need for a receiver with Arrelious Benn (high ceiling) and added underrated corner Myron Lewis (good scheme fit)

Baltimore Ravens : Despite trading out of round one they landed two top talents for their front seven in OLB Sergio Kindle and NT Terrence Cody .  Receiving tight end Ed Dickson in Round Three was a solid selection as well.

Carolina Panthers : Did not have a first round pick but managed to add three explosive offensive players with their three selections.  QB Jimmy Clausen was a tremendous day two value who will challenge Matt Moore for the starting job.  WR Brandon LaFell is a tall red zone receiver with upside and is an ideal complement opposite Steve Smith.  QB/WR/KR Armanti Edwards will be a hotly debated selection but he is a dynamic playmaker who will embrace the dual QB/WR role.  Will need to add defensive line help on day three for this grade to stick.

Miami Dolphins : Maneuvered down the draft to acquire three players at positions of need in DT Jared Odrick , OLB Koa Misi and G John Jerry .  Each player fits the Parcells mold too.

Oakland Raiders : Earns the fifth winners slot based more on avoiding athletic reaches than brilliant selections.  Also added two an additional fifth and sixth round picks in trade downs.  The picks were solid, too.  MLB Rolando McClain will be a leader in the middle.  DT Lamaar Houston is an active penetrator who is strong against the run and pass.  OT Jared Veldheer has the potential to be their future left tackle.

Losers

Jacksonville : For the third straight year, the Jaguars started off their draft with back to back picks at the same position (DE in 2008, OT in 2009 and DT in 2010).  Unfortunately, defensive tackle was not considered a position of need.  Reaching for Tyson Alualu in round 1 was one thing but compounded it by picking a clone in round 3 in D'Anthony Smith

New England : Earns points for acquiring a 2010 second round pick but did not get great value from their four top 62 selections.  TE Rob Gronkowski and WR Taylor Price were good picks at need positions and ILB Brandon Spikes was solid, but CB Devin McCourty and DE Jermaine Cunningham were reaches.  The Patriots showed chinks in their armor this past season due to sluggish draft results in recent seasons and did not make the impact selections they needed.

Cleveland : Did a nice job of waiting for QB Colt McCoy in Round Three and making the best of a bad slot when they selected CB Joe Haden in round one but S TJ Ward , RB Montario Hardesty and G Shawn Lauvao were all reaches.

Denver Broncos : Josh McDaniels gets an A+ for character, but Demaryius Thomas and Tim Tebow were high risk/high reward first rounders and G Zane Beadles (poor scheme fit) and C JD Walton were reaches along the offensive line.  WR Eric Decker was a solid pick.  Lastly, zero defensive players taken thus far.

Philadelphia Eagles : The only team to go from day one winner to day two loser, the Eagles made good selections with DE Brandon Graham and S Nate Allen but traded out of the drafts strength in round 2 to accumulate later round picks including a third round reach DE Daniel T'eo Nesheim

Other Day Two Notes:

Biggest surprise of the day was zero veterans getting traded today for picks despite having all day to make trades.  Trading them on day three will be difficult as the pace of the draft quickens and there are not 18 hours to talk before the draft opens.

Biggest Reaches:

S TJ Ward (38th, Cleveland)
G Zane Beadles (45th, Denver)
DE Jermaine Cunningham (53rd, New England)
DT Earl Mitchell (81st, Houston)
DT Corey Peters (83rd, Atlanta)
DE Daniel T'eo Neshiem (86th, Philadelphia)
G Shawn Lauvao (90th, Cleveland)
CB Kevin Thomas (94th, Indianapolis)
Note: Armanti Edwards not on my reach list.  Personal favorite as a playmaker in the wildcat era but I can understand how many consider him a reach esp. considering what Carolina gave up to get him.

Best Available:

OT Bruce Campbell , Maryland
OLB Eric Norwood , South Carolina
DE Ricky Sapp , Clemson
CB Perrish Cox , Oklahoma State
DE Corey Wooten , Northwestern
WR Mardy Gilyard , Cincinnati
TE Dennis Pitta , BYU
DE Everson Griffen , USC
QB Dan LeFevour , Central Michigan
TE Aaron Hernandez , Florida
